The fraudsters and scammers are a huge issue. For more information on this topic, visit www.419eater.com (NOT SAFE FOR WORK...but really damned funny) and look at some of the scams that are pulled involving money orders there (everyone wave hi to Nigeria now!)
Besides that, there's the issue of fees. About the only international money order/wire transfer company of any repute is Western Union, and almost every transaction has fees that are approx. 15% of the transaction value...so the fees are past the point of being stupid.
Your best alternative, as much as it pains me to say this, might be PayPal. PayPal users can pay with a bank card from Canada (I'm not sure about other countries, but perhaps they can pipe up and say something) and the fees are a lot cheaper.
The only downside is the wait time; I know that when I pay for things in the US from my PayPal account it takes between 3-5 business days for the money to be withdrawn, and if I recall correctly the wait time is even longer for other countries.
