I have an ecommerce store on my website and have used several different software solutions.

First I tried with phpcart. Not sure if that is the correct name. It was freeware and has a good support forum for helpful customizations. The problem was that it didn't come easy to make changes.

So I tried xcart and have appreciated the out of the box software. Has add-ons which are easy enough to enhance the store features.

Anyone else use a shopping cart?

I've written my own - I know how it works and the code isn't convoluted and messy (atleast not to me) ;o)

I've used a third party solution since 1999, Americart. During boom times and lean days they've never let me down.

X-Cart is great. OSCommerce is free and you can make some changes to make it perform and look better too. X-Cart is still my favorite though.

I put some goods ads from Amazon on my website.
I did not use any software. Do I need one?

Lots of them. I use ShopSite for some of my sites, including my largest. I have a couple sites on Shopify (it's good to test ideas since there are no up front fees), and use the occasional cart or software here or there for niche purposes.

I have been keeping an eye on Magento though - it looks very promising and should be launching in August.

I use litecommerce which is the sister software to x-cart. But if I were to start a new site again, I would use x-cart.

pnomsin, I think you have a misunderstanding. This forum is for e-commerce, which is mainly for people with an online shop that sells and ships physical products.

It might sound arcane but I use Paypal gateway. My site only has a handful of products so it is a good way to keep the costs down. Also, I feel as if people are comfortable using Paypal.
