I am selling an ebook. I have everything lined out except that I can't figure out how to direct my customers to the download page(hopefully secure) after a successful credit card payment. I'm using paypal and am not getting much help from them on this matter. Is this something I set up with my ecommerce company or do I handle this on my own. Any help or advice on this matter would be much appreciated!!

You should have options for this through your payment processor but I'm not sure what Paypal's are.

With EC Suite you can put access information like a username and password or a download link on the confirmation page right after the purchase is made. I know paypal has a 'return to merchant' button, but I'm not sure what all you can do with it.

in the PayPal payment form set a hidden input named "return", the value normally holds the URL on your site that is your "Thank You" page.
But you can set this to be the download page or have a link on the "Thanks" page to the download URL.

The problem is that people may pass out that url and nobody will ever purchase anything again

Nope.

Done properly each URL will be specific to the purchase by issuing a transaction code, or the URL is only available for a short time after any purchase.

People giving it away after they have downloaded it, is a different problem altogether.

There are licensing schemes and DRM applications to help counter that, but the basic rule is; if you can see it, you can steal it.

Try to use Creloaded or Zencart or Oscommerce, these softwares will be fit to your needs.
