Should I offer direct sales from my website?

Customers must contact me for custom quotes on my business website. I am wondering if I should have a flat fee for some services so that people could place their orders directly from my website. What do you all think?

Only if those services are really a flat fee for you and won't get you in to trouble working longer or harder or needed to ask for more money at some point.

I think it's always better to do that. I sell for people who do both, and I find that people who are willing to let a sale be made on-site have about 1000% higher growth of clientbase. I have been working on both types of sale for several years.

However up to a point it does depend on your services. But the important thing is to try and have a spread of products/services that means you can have both types of sale going on for you (as I have - although for me it's because I always sell on behalf of people - always moving someone else's goods or services).

Increasingly, since an online sale is cheaper (no phone call, no journey), easier (no phone call, no journey), faster (no phone call, no journey) and we are in a recession in which people have less money (need to be cheaper), less time due to overwork (no time to journey, or to stop and make a call) I would try and favour the online sale method personally. My money in that field is in high growth and in the other area, for many reasons, it is in decline.

Also if you use performance marketers (like me) you can only properly track our efforts and pay us fairly if you are making the bulk of sales online.

You are basically losing 99% of your potential customers if they have to contact you for a "custom quote." I have 10+ years of owning online businesses and can tell you right off the bat this is not good for you. The best thing to do is offer a flat fee rate so people could place an order.

It basically goes like this: The less steps for them to purchase from your website the more sales.

Hope I was able to help.

I'm not trying to contradict for the sake of it, sexy, but I don't think you should promote the idea of totally ruling out sales generated by quotes given over the phone as a result of web-generated interest:

I got a business to give a £20,000 quote for a job, and they'd never have been asked for THAT as an online sale without any human involvement!

Still, since I do largely agree with you maybe I'm just being contrary, like mary contrary... I suspect that if me and LearningNewbie got our contradictory skills together we could create one hell of a negative feedback loop.

But most of the time it IS better to take the sale online for exactly the reason you gave.

Yes you are correct. Calling for a quote is absolutely necessary in some circumstances. For example my husband does hair transplant procedures and his clients have to send him pictures so he can give them a quote as to how much graphs they will need and how much the procedure will cost. There is no way for him to charge a fixed rate as all clients have different needs.

But since the original poster mentioned in a possibility in offering a flat fee rate for some of his services I still stick with my theory that he is better off charging a fixed rate which will help him boost sales conversion rate greatly. Also, choosing a shopping cart with a one-page checkout system will help boost his online sales conversion rate even more.

Anything you do online or off you should test, test, test! Keep working on your site until you can get the highest possible conversion rate by changing aspects of it weekly or monthly depending on your traffic.

I agree completely. I don't think its a bad choice to offer flat rate fees. Just make sure you include everything. Such as phone calls, if you have to drive somewhere to meet the client, if you have to take pictures and so on. Best of luck to you!
