Good Ecommerce solution?

Hey folks!

I've been working on personal web projects for a while now but have had my first request for an Ecommerce solution. I've done some research and it looks like Joomla might be a good start. However, I definitely want to be able to hand the customer something that they can maintain with very little help from myself. The customer needs to be able to update items, quantities, order status, ect... easily while knowing very little about web design. Can anybody recommend such a solution?

Also, what is a fair price to charge? Should it be flat rate or hourly?

Thanks!

That's a very open ended question and we'll need more information!

What sort of products and how many?
What specific cart features? ie ability to show products in various ways
Do you need promotion methods, upsells, discounts, customer accounts?
What payment methods/gateways?
What budget do you have for software?
Who will provide support?

Depending on the clients abilities the admin side of things is very important, and finding one they can understand and use is a major factor - a lot of carts a very complex for the average Joe!

As for price chrage your normal rates

what's wrong with buying plain old hosting, putting in plain old pages and having it 100% controlled by the people who sell the goods - the less middle-men, the more your control and the higher your profit

it's the bottom line - people are always talking about joomla, who are joomla? do they make ANY kind of content system?

i think yahoo are rumoured to be selling something in this field in phases later this year

I haven't discussed any of this with the customer yet but they are good considerations.

Free would be best.

I will but I'd like to be as hands-off as possible.

I assume their abilities will be very minimal so I'd like something with an interface that makes it's easy for them to add and remove products.

Well I don't really have a normal rate since I've never been paid to do a webpage before. Is it customary to charge a flat-rate or hourly? Can you give me any kind of number ranges of what is average for the industry? I don't want them to feel ripped off!

I'm not sure what you're referring to... I wasn't planning on having anyone else control the page besides myself and the customer.

Joomla is a free CMS. Google it.
