I have a potential client that has a merchant account already. They use it for in office visits to take office visit payements. We are looking at possibly doing a website redevelopment/design and adding in the addition of a Magento eCommerce area to their new website. I'm new to eCommerce and this would be my first eCommerce site.

I'm wondering if they can use the merchant account they already have.

• Are Merchant Accounts universal?
• Would they need a special merchant account for a eCommerce website?
• Does Magento and other carts work with all Merchant Accounts?
• Do I need a specific account for a specific cart?

We are wanting to go the Magento route for the cart.

Merchant Accounts should "plug in" to most payment systems.

Best to check with their bank - not all banks like internet payments due to possible high risk levels.

As in you can accept payments from any country, normally yes, though you may be limited to the number of currencies you can accept.

Some banks have merchant accounts specifically for online transactions, other are happy for you to use your account no matter where the payment comes from. Again ask the bank!

Many banks provide payment gateways that plug into all the popular shopping carts. If they don't you can use one of the dozens of alternatives.

If this is your first ecommerce project you might be out of your depth, though you might find it a breeze! Why did you choose magento specifically?

Any shopping-cart worth their salt will have the ability to interact with any given merchant's API. You will find that the rates from internet transactions tend to be much higher versus POS (point of sale) transactions due to the higher rate of fraud.
