Even if its a small project (less than $2000)?

On one hand seems like covering all the bases from a legal standpoint.
On the other it seems bureaucratic and realistically it wouldnt be worth pursuing legal action through courts anyway.

My intention is to ask for 50% up front so the potential loss is limited.

The only other point to consider is that my website name is not the same as my registered company name. So a contract seems like a good idea for explicitly stating who the parties are. If the client goes litigation crazy (worse case scenario of course) it might to useful to have the contract as a protection against personal liability.

Any legal experts out there?

Always use a contract, even if you type it up yourself. It's not bureaucratic, but it can protect you. Otherwise, even with seemingly nice people, it becomes a matter of he said/she said. It also helps define boundaries and takes pressure off the business relationship because you both know what you need to do and when you need to do it.

I have a contract for even the non-profit, donated sites I do. This way I don't kill myself trying to honor something that the client "thought" we agreed to and the client doesn't get bent out of shape or expect more than I am providing.
