I own a web design business and was looking to sell some generic scripts to everyone without needing to contact me or wait to receive the link to the download. I want to use a shopping cart and paypal payment services, and I'm looking for suggestions on the shopping cart. What is the best website software out there for a downloads shop?

Also note that they will be receiving a unique user ID and will be inserted into my database, so I'm looking for a script in PHP so that I can add these features myself.

Paypal shop has that ability, but you need to be a registered store owner for that to be possible

I believe oscommerce has that ability with plain install. even if you needed add on module, there would be a free plugin for it guaranteed.

Other choice would be magento, but it is much more complicated...

There are many e-commerce solutions, but I suggest you to take a look at Summer Cart and try the all the features on the online demo. Summer Cart supports e-goods and PayPal. Also it's very easy to modify - I mean you will easily integrate the custom design that you'll create for your online store.

osCommere or Magento should be a good solution. They are the most popular today and is proven to work well with ecommerce sites.

I always recommend zen-cart. It is powerful enough to build any size business sites and it does include 3 methods of Paypal modules.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! I tried out a lot of these live demos and installed a few to try and decided to go with Magento. osCommerce is also a good shopping cart and very widely used, but it became too much work and confusion to get the downloads part working and Magento had a very simple solution for this. I do want to point out however that it requires support of InnoDB storage engine which can be a problem on some servers. I had to change to a new server in order to install and use Magento so be weary on the older servers out there.

Thanks again!

When trying to install is says uploade the catalog directory to your server using FTP. How do I do that? I cant find the catalog directory.

Depends on what exactly you want from a "shopping cart".

You can try flexible ecommerce shopping cart software by Bitcart free for first 30 days. I am an existing bitcart member, i have a short online shop for which i need to have low cost solutions but has same rich feature which i want to see in a shopping cart. I hope you will get your desired ecommerce solution at Bitcart.

Depending on your requirements, fiveself might be a good choice, its super inexpensive, especially for whats included. It also looks pretty hip, you can customize the look and feel pretty easy too. I've had no issues with them to replace my etsy site. Starts at 4.99/mth with 30 days free, which is a pretty crazy deal.

It works pretty well for me too. I haven't checked it out in a while here, but it was a good alternative to osCommerce when it went through its rough patch.
