Hi there, me again I'm obviously looking into buying an SSL cert for my ecommerce site but i am torn between buying from an SSL reseller or a Certificate Authority direct? What are the pros and cons (having never done it before)

thanks in advance

You pay for the brand name, really, in all honesty, a VeriSign SSL should pay for itself over time. Your online sales or conversion rates can actually increase just from having the VeriSign site seal on your website. One company, Opodo, their sales rose by 10%.

VeriSign offers best protection against phishing attacks and best browser compatibility of any SSL brand.

As for your other query, You can get more benefits from a reseller. You’ll make savings for a start and some resellers have extra benefits too. I would really recommend <removed>. You’ll save at least 10% with them (compared to CA retail prices) and you get a personal Account Manager – great if you need some SSL advice or technical support.

Nonsense...
An ssl certificate encrypts communication between the browser and the server.
It will do nothing to prevent phishing if the user is not careful, and on an equal encryption level, every ssl certificates are equals.

As it's stated before, you pay for the reputation of the ssl supplier.
Because some demands you to fax a copy of your id, and actually call you to verify that you are a physical person.

See a ssl certificate a bit like an ID card.
You could even create your own SSL certificate, it would be valid.
But as you are not a trusted certificate authority (aka CA), your customers browser would ask them each time if they really want to trust a certificate authority that they don't know.

And on that ground, verisign have a very good reputation.

Nothat the poster has a vested interest in trying to promote any particular Verisign reseller or anything.

McAffee phoned me yesterday offering me their secure website system.
I do not know much about this website security.
She also told me that our sales would go up (she would wouldn't she !)
But knowing what do about McAfee I would not touch their system with a barge pole even if it was free - and it was quite dear $ 900 a year !

How many non "techies" REALLY look to see what certificate a site is using...?

Most I have asked don't even know about the padlock symbol in the browser!

Anywho... For years we've been using Thawte but they have removed all their contact phone numbers. Proved very hard to get hold of them so looks like the powers that be will be going with Verisign.

(Oooww...! Hope our sales go up by 10% )
