Your guess is probably as good as anyone else's.
One thing to realize about approaching big companies, if you don't have a portfolio to show your expertise in solving a particular type of problem, you probably won't get the job.
My son works for a company that creates databases. For the first few years almost all their clients were limited resource non-profit organizations. Only in the last year or so have they built their reputation high enough to be able to attract higher budget clientele.
Also keep in mind that you might be able to make a lot of money by selling many copies of something at a low price. Or by offering a subscription service for access to help with applications you are an expert in. There are probably people who would pay a little to have you troubleshoot open source code problems.
For instance I gave up on osCommerce because I couldn't find a way to get it to recognize my download directory. I can't afford to pay much, but would consider investing in someone editing my php and sending me the corrected files.
