People do not care about how long the domain name of a site is, if your website has content that people wants or needs they will bookmark your site or remember the name otherwise they will pass it by and forget about it, no matter if the name has 5 letters or 50.

Short names are bought for branding purpose. If you have the money to brand and promote, you can buy any name. Domainers create the hype for short names, but if no one is interested they usually do not renew.. (You can grab them after it gets deleted from the registrar, if you are interested).

"Content is King"

Google is not owning NexusOne.com, but when you search for Nexus One in google, www.google.com/phone comes on top.

Even in Bing :-)

I dont think a 5 letter domain name will make any huge difference.
Following are the 6 things you should keep in mind before selecting the domain name for your co.

1. It should be relatively short.
2. It should be memorable.
3. Make sure it doesn't confuse with other
(otherwise there will be chances of loosing your targeted audience)
4. Make sure it is simple, people should not often misspell it.
5. It should relate to your core business.
6. Always know who your target audience is
Prefer dot com if you are targeting for international audience

Small domain name can not do anything adverse only thing have to see the name is worth or not.

Ideally, with the right domain name, customers will type the company's url directly into the address bar instead of using a search engine to navigate to the site.
By having a domain name that promotes so-called type-in traffic, businesses avoid having to rely on sponsored links on Yahoo!, Google or other search engines, for which they are charged a small fee per click - or hiring a consultant to try to make their web pages more search-engine friendly and appear higher on results pages.
"The best names are usually the key words of the name of the company.
If your company has a unique name, try to purchase that domain name on the primary market.

I think more than the length of the name, you have to invest in a domain that is relevant to your site.

Re: Is it worth buying Small Domain names for business?

I just came across your post and as an experienced domain investor I thought I would leave my “pennies worth”.

Using Keyword Rich Domains
What would be more useful and effective is to buy domains with the following in mind:
1) Choose the following domain extensions, .Com, .Net or .Org.
2) If you live in a specific country, i.e. in the United Kingdom then buying a domain with that countries extension can often be worthwhile – in the case of the UK, .Co.Uk.
3) Its much more important and useful to find domain names that are keyword-rich and relevant to your business niche, i.e. if your business niche was providing free websites then MakeaFreeWebsite.org would be a great name to buy.

Why…? Let me illustrate
a) Make Free Website - It’s a keyword that people actually search for EVERY month, last count there were 40,400 searches for the EXACT phrase “Make Free Website”.
b) Cost Per Click Savings - Great way of saving money on your Cost Per Click budget with the likes of Google AdWords.
- The exact phrase “Make Free Website” on Google AdWords cost $4.98 PER CLICK!
- I’ll do the maths for you – Potentially the cost per month for this very popular keyword phrase is $201,192 PER MONTH – totally crazy!

Your best solution
Once you’ve found a keyword rich domain name(s) that is relevant to you business niche I would suggest that you did the following or you have it done professionally:
a) WordPress Blog - Create a WordPress Blog on your new keyword-rich domain name
- Add the following basic content pages, About Us, Contact Us, Privacy Policy and Terms and Condition.
b) Content - Add unique content relevant to your niche market on a regular base, or pay someone to write regular articles for your blog.
c) Meta Tags - Add basic Meta Tag information to your Blog, even if it’s only on the homepage its better than nothing.
d) SiteMap - Use a WordPress plug-in that created a SiteMap for your new Blog and make a submission to all the major search engines, i.e. Google, Yahoo and Bing (MSN).
e) Web 2.0 Backlinks - Last and very importantly build some important backlinks on a number of Web 2.0 properties, so you can benefit from their popularity with the likes of Google and get some important “link juice” going to your Blog.
- A few Web 2.0 sites to consider are livejournal.com, scribe.com, wikispaces.com, quizilla.com, xanga.com and vox.com.

Get Indexed
The most important thing is to make sure your new Blog site gets indexed as quickly as possible so your keyword rich domain will benefit from being a popular exact keyword phrase.

The SEO development required is very little and if you’re not good at SEO you can always contract the work out for a very modest cost.

I hope the above strategy helps and clarifies your original question.

All the best

depends on your business. if you want seo traffic, long keyword is not so bad. if you want branded keyword, short is better

I think having memorable domain, that's easy to spell, has a .com, and keywords that reflect your business, you can't go wrong!
