Here's a few things I don't like:
· spammy adverts all over the web - adverts kill the net experience. Like this one! ---------->
· rampant capitalism in terms of consumers being exploited as much as possible by any means necessary
· rampant consumerism in terms of people being manipulated into buying rubbish they don't need
· over-inflated worth of products and services by nefarious marketing and branding
· capitalism without a conscience
Are these feelings and perspectives incompatible with having your own business (especially an online business)? If you're not as cut-throat, manipulative, corrupt, or sociopathic as your competitor, can your business still compete and survive?
One of the things that has stopped me from really seriously thinking about running my own business in the past is an assumption about how ruthless, cold-hearted and capitalistic you have to be. I suppose this is due to my past experience of working under managers and business owners who really don't care about anyone (customers or employees) as long as they are making a profit and getting blood from a stone.
Does it have to be like that? Are there any business owners out there that feel that they don't have and don't need a 'killer instinct'? Can you still make a profit by not taking advantage of people in every conceivable way that you can? Is there a 'right personality' for this kind of thing, and if there is, how do I know I have it?
Thanks for your thoughts on this!
