I have an opportunity to make some extra money on the side as a freelancer. I would mostly be building out content pages written by the website owner using html/css. My question would be what is a good rate for this?

Also it is possible I can do some freelance ppc work. Has anyone had any experience with this? In particular, we are having a hard time coming up with a practical system of payment that works well both for the client and freelancer. Any thoughts?

really depends on the market you will be getting your jobs in, your skill level , speed of delivery etc.

going rates are anywhere from $1 - $100 per hour, and sometimes more.

figure out a hourly rate for yourself. Then base each job on how long it will take you X hourly rate X 2.5

the 2.5 is because everyone always assumes they can do something faster than it ends up taking them lol.

so say you want $10/h, and get a job you can do in 10 hours.

10 X 10 X 2.5 = $250.

which would be a reasonable rate.

Ok. Sounds good. Thanks for the advice.

Any thoughts on how to work out a mutually beneficial system for outsourcing/freelancing ppc? Should it be hourly, per campaign, per conversion?

Thanks,
Josh

I'm a web developer. No matter what I do, I charge a rate of $45 an hour, which is pretty reasonable. My partner and I have only had our business for a year though, and most of our work is more then plan html/css. I recommend starting out relatively low and raising your prices as you go. It's always worked for us and never resulted in less business (higher profile clients actually)

Forgot to mention, the way we do pricing is per job. We create an estimate with how long it should take us, which contains a few extra hours just in case.

i think it depends on the job, if you find it easy for you then you can rate on hourly basis, but if its hard, you can rate it in campaign basis. but i all depend on the agreement of both parties.

most of clients like fixed prices, but it works when the job is enough small to be sure that your efforts worth it. If you've good reputation than you can give affordable XX hour rate and give your estimation in hours. But keep in mind that it may take more than expected so I recommend to estimate for 10-20% more, I'm sure that later you will know how usually it goes for you so you can easily find some balance.

At the primary stage the hourly rate will be very low. The minimum rate is $1-$1.5. But with the passage of time your rate will be increased.

The minimum rate is somewhat good to start with. It gets better when you establish your rep.

The rate would depend on the kind of job you'll be doing for them, most often web design is ideal as a project basis

Hey, that's a great idea. I know someone who wants to start her own freelancing venture. Charging per project with that amount is awesome.

Ok here's a question:

How about commission on e-commerce sites im building? Whats a good percentage-take to offer my clients ?

I am currently building two e-commerce sites for clients that offer physical products. Instead of taking more money for the design initially, I am thinking of just taking a percentage of their sales - Is this normal? I was thinking somewhere in the 10-30% range. Any advice on this?

Is there a time limit on the sales commission you take? If the e-commerce site is new, it might take a while to get paid by commission.
