There isn't a forum for this so I'll post it here.

Has anyone here used any form of more traditional advertising for their websites?

I'm working on a project that, in the future, will benefit from forms of advertising other then the web. If you have used magazines, newspapers, fliers, billboards (or other outdoor) methods of advertising, how did it improve your traffic--if you saw any increase at all--and did any of those convert? What methods did you use/are using? Did you find it worth it for the cost? Or did you consider it money down the drain?

This architecture company I used to work for ran print campaigns as well as online ones. The online campaigns worked out significantly cheaper, and brought about far better results.

I think it would totally depend on the content of the site.

It seems that so many insurance brokers are advertising their websites on TV and in print these days, obviously it's working for them.

For a real niche, I would probably say no, stick to online advertising and promotion.

Thanks for the input, SG.

I'm developing an employment site that will start out basically as a blog with job search functionality provided by an API. Later, I will add forums before rolling out my own job posting software (hopefully), which will allow employers to post ads and jobseekers to upload their CVs, etc.

Which will be the point I begin looking at offline advertising; billboards and newspapers, most likely.

I think could work pretty well. A lot of the larger employment sites use conventional print advertising, Monster.co.uk springs to mind. Their ad campaigns, particularly the TV ones, were awesome:

Haha, thanks for reminding me about those, just had a pretty good chuckle.

I guess everything depends on how much income my site is already generating by Phase Three. If there's a distinct lack of interest I won't bother but I have some pretty good ideas so I'm not too worried just yet; there wouldn't be any point continuing if I was!

For some reason this discussion has given me a new boost of energy for the project. I'm feeling pretty excited about its future. Eeee!

Maybe it's just the coffee...

Yeah they're kind of off the wall without being too stupid, the ad team behind those adverts go it spot on.

If you get the interest in your site, the skies the limit.

It's good to excited about a project

Would you do it again considering the cost?

Then it's not recommendable right? It will increase your expenses and decrease your business capital.

Obviously it pays to advertise you website anywhere you can.

But traditional print advertising is very expensive.

But it depends on your niche and location.

Eg if your business relies on one city then you could advertise in that city.
If your business is world wide then you have a problem.

If you are in a niche, then you could advertise in magazines for that niche.
