I think the first thing to consider is that an e-commerce website is necessarily a different animal from the static page websites you may be accustomed to. E-commerce means a product catalog which means the site is database-driven. Not only must you have an easily searchable catalog, but also the administrative means to update and maintain your catalog. You'll also need a payment solution. The simplest approach and the most cost effective is to use PayPal which is much more robust than it used to be. You really need to engage an experience consultant who can step you through the process.

Good luck!

Daniel

If you are going to run ecommerce website, it will be a good idea to buy SSL Certificates to make your payment secure and safe.

1. Get your product ready
2. Test your concept, if unique (downloadable content, program, etc)
3. Setup with a company like shopify or 3dcart - Managed shopping cart solutions
4. Pay for a custom design, or use a template
5. Fill in your products
6. Test you website fully
7. Add all safety and legal information like privacy policy, return policy, visa/mastercard/paypal logos,
8. Setup payment processor (paypal, authorize.net, your bank)
9. Buy a domain name and SSL (SSL comes with certain shopping carts already) Buy the domain name for a few years for SEO purposes - And get a domain name that has your keyword in it.
10. Setup a special launch promotion and start sharing your link.

Thats the best I can do off the top of my head.

Or use a payment processor or merchant gateway.

If you have setup a payment processor you do not need SSL

Wrong on both counts.

There is NO "SEO value" in registering a host name for 'X' number of years.
Matt cutts on that point.

What little value "keyword domain names" had is being diminished
And again if you don't believe me ....

Worth reiterating the point re domain name being of little or no SEO value. However, don't forget its impact on the reader - syphilitic-elephants.com would probably not attract people looking for baby clothes, for example. A degree of relevance to product/service/fundtion can be important.

If a relevant domain name was vital we'd probabnly not be hearing so much about Facebook or Twitter!

I think that the 1st thing you should do is to build a good e-commerce web site. There are many shopping carts available - I'd recommend you Miva Order or Magento.

Then choose the best host for running ecommerce web site.

If you planing to start an online shopping website then go for some multi[ple vendor enabled shopping cart script. Most of the scripts available today will not support multiple vendors. Multiple vendors can attract more vendors to your website. So the income will also be very good.

If you follow these steps I guess, you can go ahead.

1. In order to conduct business, you need to establish a business entity and obtain a sales tax ID.
2. When you are registered as a legitimate business owner, it is time to open a business bank account.
3. After that you can start building your website. First, register a domain name. Names that end in ’.com’ are best.
4. The domain name should include one or more of your target keywords. One of the keys to successful e-commerce businesses is a professional website.
5. Your website is the first and often the only impression your visitors will have of your business.

I think the first thing you should really do is devise a business plan before you implement. Gather specific data like what would i sell (something you think majority of people would buy)? Then how much would be the tentative budget(capital)? What platform shall i use? How would i market this (know your competitor and what are they doing)? How will i drive people to my site(SEO). ETC., Hope that helps!

With the help of POS software, you can have an easy-to-use product catalog which does other things, such as inventory management and stock control.
