I am fairly proficient with HTML and Wordpress, but now find myself needing to create a web application with several database tables. Of course, MySQL and PHP seem to be the tools of the trade, but is there maybe a simpler interface that lets me create a web application without learning that much about PHP?

And by simpler you mean what? Drag and Drop and with GUI? I doubt there's anything like that, since you're quite correct that you won't go wrong with PHP and MySQL.

Wordpress runs on PHP and MySQL, and you did said you're fairly Proficient with it, ergo you're also fairly Proficient with both?
