How do you pay for goods?

I'm curious to find out how you pay for your goods online. Do you trust a site that charges and wants payment prior to delivery, or would you rather see some type of product before-hand? Do you trust run of the mill sites or do you look for some type of quality assurance seal?

Recently, I've had experiences on both sides of the fence and now I'm hesitant to pay for anything until I see either some progress or some kind of half-way decent effort to supply my product.

My first experience was that I paid for a single item and was guaranteed a 48 hour turnaround. This was not the case and filing a chargeback was on the doorstep. (recently got my item after 7 days) My second experience is that I paid for an item and found that there was a good effort to provide that product. However, that product is not complete and now I'm left sending emails to the seller looking for answers.

BTW, thank you to the owners and mods for implementing these new sections.

Your welcome

I generally only buy products online from large, established companies with secure ordering systems. You have to be really careful when dealing with freelancers and such. I think most are very honest, but there is always that occasional bad seed. Always ask lots of questions especially if it is a big ticket service or item.

I guess you can always do a chargeback if the good is not delivered (i have never had that happen to me) but you better keep as much record of the conversations and trasaction with the person or company as possible...

I usually stick with the big companies when purchasing anything online. I'll sometimes pay extra for an item just for the peice of mind. If I do buy from a lesser known shop, I always research first and try to find out as much as I can about the company before I put my trust into them.

Firtsly, if making a purchase directly with a credit card the site MUST have a secure order page or that would be a definite no-go. Otherwise I use paypal, either way gives me some security if it goes wrong.

I only make on-line purchase for high cost items from reputable companies that I personally have heard of or that friends have had good experiences with. If I found what I was looking for on a new site that had no page rank then they would not get my business.

However, for small value items I would, and have, taken a chance on sites I have never heard of or who have no track record. Fortunately I have not had any problems so far

I generally look for some sort of reliable contact method before buying a product. If a website has no phone number listed, that's a definite step in the wrong direction. In fact, if the site doesn't have a toll-free number, that's not too good either. I've been stuck in situations where I needed to contact a seller due to a shipping error and couldn't get ahold of them, and I've learned from my mistakes.

When dealing with online purchases, I do most of my buying through eBay and Amazon anyway, and I'm pretty comfortable with their level of safety (yes, even eBay).

I've heard, and this was only a rumor so I can't provide proof but...It is my understanding PayPal will freeze accounts when using the chargeback system. Do you have experience with this? If so, how long was the account frozen, how were you treated, and most importantly did your other accounts freeze as well?

I have subscriptions set up using this method and if my account were to be frozen it would effect quite a bit of my business.

Indeed. I've never had any experience with this chargeback system myself, and it would be interesting to see how reliable it is.

I do exactly the same. I think they are too big to let anything happen - they can't afford losing good reputation.
