Im probably going to open myself up to a lot of abuse here but..

My accountancy firm specialises in helping people in the UK design industry and I am keen to improve the service that I offer.

If anyone has had any positive or negative experiences of accountants then I would be interested to hear your comments.

If nothing else, you can use this thread for releasing a bit of pent up aggression!!

Thanks

Dean

What would be sweet is an accountant who specializes in very small/self employed businesses, oh and they allow pay as you go, only paying a percentage of all money coming in rather than coming up with money out of pocket each month and then hoping you can fit the bill every month after that. All the while trying to keep money in my pocket and not get absolutely reamed for the rest of my life by the IRS.....

Ok, I think that was a little bit of both suggestion and rage.

In house accountants are the best. You are always on the source and know that is going on. They can also do cashflow, statistics and all those pretty things.

I like the Cptn's rant! Now that would be an accountant!

I've had an accountant similar to that, that kept the books, but did it for a very low rate (depending on how I was doing). He was a close, family friend and had helped people for years. He worked with families, small businesses, large business, I think he did it all as a independent accountant. He had also employeed a couple of younger accountants, paid them well, and was financially independent. It was a big loss of a friend and a business associate when he passed away.

I've not found other firms, or individuals, that worked as he did. The biggest thing that he had going for him was the "one-on-one" type of business that he ran. He had a caring attitude that was manifested by his billing (you didn't lose him if you had a rough month and finances were low).

It would be hard to compare firms. However, I would suggest that any accountant firm have that caring, one-on-one, family type relationships with their clients.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that. I am sure accountants you are talking about still exist, I hope I fill some of those slots and aspire to more. I am setting up an association of such accountants, at bacas.co.uk.

The website should be up and running in a few days time, but will need updating for a week or two. Please visit.

I believe we are here to serve and help others make the best of their gifts, but we accountants can only do that if we are paid - if we go out of business we cannot help anyone. It is my intention to help people to develop their business skills (and systems) so I will not have to carry them so long the burden becomes too much.

I happen to be an Accountant that works for a local firm. We are not all bad, some of us will glady spend the time with clients, giving the advice they need and not charge them the earth. Our client base is so diverse but we have staff with experiance in pretty much every sector. That being said, I would still rather work for myself offering help and advice with internet businesses, its a pipe dream.
