I am a novice programmer and have no experience in setting up web sites for commercial gain. I would like to set up a site that basically posts the weekly grocery deals in my local town as an option to the flyers that are circulated door to door. I am concerned with the legal issues with the main grocery chains when it comes to their products and their brands. Is there a site or a book that could help me with these basic issues and is this site worth it at all if I am not selling anything but just relying on a little advertising income. Thx.

Your best bet is to talk to some of the product manufacturers. You will most likely find that they are going to be fine with free promotion as long as you make it clearly known that you are in no way affiliated with them and that their names are registered TM's and copywrited.

Is there a legal standard that is generally followed or is a disclaimer posted on the site adequate. Also, am I naive to think that large supermarket chains will pay an amount to advertise their products on my site.

It might be hard at first but as your website grow, that is a possibility but don't expect it to happen fast. It takes time and a lot of it.
