I am sorry if this has been asked before, but I searched the forum and didnt see anything like this.
Anyway,
One of my many hobbies is paper crafting. I have some ideas on how to make some product kits that a person could download and print out to create their own craft projects. How would I go about selling a downloadable product? Would any open source carts like ZenCart or OSCommerce handle this? Is there an eaisier or better way? What about Paypal. I know I have purchased some things that take you to the paypal site, then automatically email you the file after payment. I looked around paypal's site and couldnt find any info on it. Any help is appreciated!

There are lots of shopping carts out there that can handle digital products. I know that zen cart does support digital products. Depending on the level of features and service you will need you might want to research different solutions. I've personally worked on a two websites that sell digital scrapbooking materials and they both moved from zen cart.

Two websites that deal with printable materials in a digital file are listed below. They might give you some ideas on what you want your site to be.

I have been using ClickBank forever and am very happy with it. You'll have to pay $50 to set up a merchant account and then after that you only pay a percentage of sale.

I have used PayPal and not had any troubles but the nice thing about ClickBank is that it makes it easy to have an affiliate program too which is always a good thing!

Both sites allow you to set up a page that the customer is delivered to after the sale concludes. You can have your download info there. I usually have an email capture system there (autoresponder) which will then automatically email the download info. I have my download stuff in a password controlled area usually.

I am new to electronic marketing so please be gentle. This thread is very informative. Thanks to the contributors. Forgive me if I am asking things already covered or are extremely basic.

I have a few (5-10 now; maybe 15-20 in next year) electronic items that I would like to sell and do not have a strong grasp on how to do it. The items I have are at this point two pages each. They will be in PDF format.

Where do I start (sorry for such a broad question)? I envision putting together a website or having that done by a service or friend. Then pay a hostng service to host the site. I got this far last year and then ran out of time and cancelled the hosting service account. I have revised my products and am eager to try again.

I will either sell by sending customers to a link to download the file(s) after they pay or by emailing the file or link to paid customers. Is this on track based on the scant info I have provided?

I would like to use a payment service such as paypal that is widely recognized, providing customers with a sense of security due to paypal reputation. I have a paypal account now, though it is not a seller account.

What do I need to sell intellectual property this way? Probably:

A website;

A service that allows selling electronic/downloadable products;

some guidance

Besides this thread can anyone recommend sites or provide info or links that may be useful?

Again, sorry for the basic questions. Right now at best I know just enough to be dangerous.

A website, a premier or business PayPal account and a secure script to deliver the goods. Sending an encrypted expiring link to a hidden file on your server is the safer method to help prevent unauthorized downloads.

I have started looking at and reading about clickbank. The secure script is something that a service such as theirs would cover, right? That would be the actual mechanism through which the product I am describing would be delivered from what I understand...(?)

Are there any books for dummies on this subject or websites that anyone would recommend?

I have never sold anything through clickbank so I can't answer that part. I have heard that to get any action you need to have a hot product and/or a large commission.

Most of the stuff I see sold there is sold from what I call minisites. It is sold from one or two page sites.

I had the impression from your initial post that you were more interested in an online store where you were selling your product. Something along these lines, not my site and not a referal link.

Most anything you place on a public web site can be found whether linked or not if someone tries hard enough. I have had unlinked pages get indexed when I did not want them to be.

I bought the same script. I have it up and running but have not customized the site or stocked the store. I hope to get around to doing that now that my busy season has ended.

Would be happy to share any knowlegde. Also I founfd the site owner to be extremely helpful with my pre-purchase questions which is why I don't mind giving him a plug when the chance arises.
