Just curious what other people do...

I usually create three mock-ups for a client, just a photoshop file based around the feeling/content they want. Each one I try and change the layout structure, the color scheme, and range from very clean to more complex (depending on if they specify a style or not).

Anyone else?

I have herd people start by just sketching out ideas, and let the client pick from a 20 thumb nails, then 5 rough sketches, then 3 refined sketches?

For me it depends on the client and how much they are willing to pay. I typically just create one and hope they like it. I do spend a lot of time talking to them to get to know what they want. I've been fortunate in that most of my clients have liked the basic structure of my first attempt that I didn't really need to submit a completely new layout. Mostly just make some changes to the one I sent.

I'll always do 2 or 3 designs though if they're not satisifed. I think that's only fair. Though beyond 3 I would suggest that my aesthetics and theirs just may not meet. That can certainly happen.

I've probably just been lucky and at times I have presented more than 1 design comp. When I do I try to keep them rough and just show the basic structure so I can work that one more instead of having to spend time on the details of more than one design.

I usually do 1 comp as well. If you ask enough questions and get a good feel for what the client wants, you can do just one with as many revisions as needed.

That's my goal anyway. I think it will depend on the client some as a larger business is more likely to want several comps upfront to take back to a committee to decide, but for most small business owners with enough listening to what they want you can often get something they like on one attempt. I'm always willing to do another comp or two if it's completely off, but my experience has been that the first comp just needs some modification to make the client happy.
