I have a client that wants to accept orders online. He already accepts orders over the phone and has a merchant account system that allows him to take their credit card numbers over the phone.

I would like to setup a secure shopping cart on his site. Do I need a SSL cert?

Could my client login to a web interface and see what orders have been placed then manually enter the credit card number in his machine?

If he wants to process card details then his site will need SSL for the checkout/payment pages.

There are many off the shelf shopping cart systems available, all of which he can login to and view orders, add/edit products etc.

If you can give us some more details you'll get some recommendations...

1. Is the site on a Unix or Windows server?
2. How many products (roughtly)?
3. What sort of products are they?
4. Any special features needed? ie Wholesale, downloadable goods...

Have you tried using ibill? They take a pretty decent size chunk, but they provide you with everything needed.

On the whole I think users appreciate it when the whole ordering system is handled over a secure connection (not just the payment part) - investing in an SSL certificate can give your site some extra kudos with clients.

If your client already has a merchant account then you'll need to find a credit card processor that supports his acquiring bank - either that or he should ask his bank directly.

Most CC processors have excellent systems for manual entry and auto CC entry (including repeat billing etc.)

Again, if your client already has a Merchan Account then any CC processor that works with the bank should be fine.
