How much should I pay?

I am waiting for a quote to come back from a local web designer and don't really know whether it will be good or bad as I dont know how much I should expect to pay. I was looking for some advice as to what I should expect to pay so I that I know whether I have a good/bad quote or not when I get it...

My website is mattscanvas . co . uk and at present I simply use 'buy now' buttons with paypal. However I am looking to have an integrated shopping cart similar to canvasrus . co . uk. I only need the templates for say one or two products to then allow me to fill the shop with the rest of my products as the whole site is soon to be updated with new designs/sections etc and I can do this myself once I have a template to work on.

Can anyone advise as to roughly how much this should cost me? Just want to know whether the quote I get is reasonable or whether I need to go hunting for someone else... Thanks

Why don't you use a site like scriptlance.com or getafreelancer.com to get a bid. That way you know roughly what the competing pricing is.

if you are using an osc as your cart, a half decent price to customize a template, integrate and help you set up the cart (not including populating) would be around $250 USD, atleast, that is what my firm would charge for a template and integration.

I dont get why anyone pays anything for stuff like this.. There are free shopping cart systems avalible.. Zen cart for example.. It's probably already in your hosting package in the fantastico library.

People pay for this kind of stuff because if they want to make money, they should atleast look profressional. Yes, they can do it themselves, and many people do, and most of those businesses fail within the first 5 years. Many people like custom work done, or a custom template, so it doesnt look like you slapped down $50 to buy one. Oh ya, that will make you look good, trying to get people to spend money in your cart, when it is obvoius to them that you cant even put in the money to take yourself 'out of the crowd'.
Another reason, SALES, you dont just build a cart and they will come, its called SEM and SEO, and unless someone plans on sitting down and reading about it, many people just dont want to deal with it. You would not get a mechanic to fix your gas lines in your house would you? no? so dont try to become a business person just because you have an idea to sell something. Take it to the people who know how to get it sold.
80% of sales come from search engines, well, if you are not marketing properly, and dont have the proper SEO to get you on atleast the firt 3 pages of search results, well, you might as well pack in your towel and cut your losses, because your cart will do nothing but cost you money, i.e. hosting and such.
Defeats the purpose of the site doesnt it? if no money is coming in, but money is going out for it?

in short, IMHO, if you want something done right, get someone who knows what they are doing. Time is money in business after all, the more time one spends trying to figure out what is going on, the less money they will make. Again though, without proper knowledge of SEM and SEO, they are dead in the water anyways

now, i could be wrong, and the last 9 years of experience in the business could have completely mislead me, but, it is very unlikely.

just my opinion

It really depends on what his/her skills. Look for the webdesigner's portfolio. Sure you can get a $100 site done with an cheap designer, but the quality might not be as good. Local designers provide a more personal/customized service, so it might be worth it to pay more. Perhaps $400$-600.

Yes, I agree, you get what you pay for when it comes to hiring development companies, unforuntate as it is, it stands the same in many aspects of life.

There is research that needs to be done before one even thinks about opening an online ecom, like CC encryption, security, knowledge on american laws for merging CC numbers, customer service, many many things.

You can just start selling socks because knitting socks is your hobby, you need business knowledge, I am starting to babble off topic now, so I will stop here. As there is so much more to an online business than just having a shopping cart and template, and all too often i see people get lead blindly into the business just to crash at the end.

sorry, gotta run, feel a rant coming on

I think it depend on the designer/programmer standard, for myself I just charging US$180 for a 'unique' and customized template (I'm specializing on ZenCart) and that's fine with me, that amount is enough to cover my expense since I'm a freelancer without employee under me. Furthermore designer location might affect pricing.

Why not give ccnow.com a try? Your customers can pay via credit card or paypal. I do have a site which is using ccnow shopping cart and i am satisfied with their services. The features is good and your customers can choose which currency for their payment. Additional, an online receipt will be generated.

All the best.

I found an EXCELLENT programmer that I now use exclusively. You can PM me if you'd like his name. He is from Pakistan, does careful & precise work, knows English better than a lot of Americans and will not stop until the work is exactly the way you want it (without asking for more $). He charges me around $10 an hour but I think he often goes over his predicted time frame without asking for anything extra. He's got an excellent rating on rentacoder.

Anyway, I really appreciate his work. By the way, he didn't code the two websites in my signature. He did some other work for me.

We used to use CCnow but they started charging a monthly fee about 2 years ago & so I canceled my account. It used to be free to use. You just paid a percentage when you made a sale.
