I have a website that I've had up for one year. I get about 50 unique hits a day and am upgrading the site. New CMS, new look, and we are going to try and retain as many people through some "out of the box" channels.

We wanted to try paid for traffic for a couple of months to hopefully get a small percantage of them to take an interest and participate in the website. Has anyone had any success with measures like this? Are paid for traffic companies even reliable?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've never used them, but everyone that I know that has has always said it isn't worth it. Maybe 1% of them stay longer than a few seconds and none of them convert into sales, leads, or regular traffic. Spend your money advertising instead.

The balance between paid traffic and organic is an ongoing discussion.

Typically it depends on your cost-to-price ratio, plus whether the product is sale-able. If your cut is good and the product is hot in the search, then it is worth going after.

Small cost into venues such as AdWords can be rewarding. At least to test the waters. They are safe enough to not lose your shirt, yet enough to gain experience.
