I quickly need to change the way I manage our distribution and inventorying process. I'm hoping there's someone out there willing to provide some feedback.

I was about to have a custom application developed to cater to my needs but I'm almost positive that there must already be software that does the following or can be configured to do the following (sorry for the length - SKIP TO BOTTOM FOR SHORT SUMMARY):

-------

***Summary: 1. Something that will maintain inventory (barcode scan of UPC receiving in/out) 2. Something that will take in a batch of orders that need to be shipped. 3. Automatically determines what's available to be shipped and what needs to be backordered then proceed to print picking lists for anything that can ship immediately. 4. Items are picked and then scanned for accuracy then order is closed and a report of the days shipment is generated

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

That's a hell of an opening post for a board like this!

I have a few clients who ship in fairly high volumes and the answer is that...there is no answer. You're gonna have to get this built custom.

I really appreciate your response. That was the answer I was looking for I guess. I just wanted to make sure that going custom was the way to go. I'd hate to have it made then find out theres something out there thats already does it. Many distribution centers follow that regimen so I figured there would have to be software that I could buy that does it.

As for the crazy long post - I copy/pasted an outline given to a programmer. I'm going to go ahead and edit that out and only leave the summary.

Thanks again.

I'll still check back later to see if anyone was able to come up with a quicker solution.

Hey Shantastic,

I work for midsize business and I exactly know what you are looking for. I am a Logistics Supervisor and we use this Software called Atrex. It does all of those things you mentioned and it is fairly priced.

Here's the description from there site:
Atrex is an inventory control/point-of-sale (POS) package for the business that desires complete control over stock levels and inventory tracking. Designed for the Microsoft Windows environment, Atrex is comprehensive, intuitive, and easy to use.

Rather than being designed for any one specifc industry, Atrex is designed to be usable by most retail or wholesale operations. Current Atrex installations include computer retailers, pet stores, crafters, motorcycle dealers, automotive repair shops, locksmiths, and government agencies.
If you're tired of running your business by hand, computerization is one of the quickest and most efficient ways to increase the profits of your business. Computerization allows you to quickly determine how much stock you have on hand, see when you are running low on certain items without having to do a physical inventory, create and generate a mailing list of customers to promote repeat business, and keep a history of your sales. Simply put, we are in the business of making your business run smoother.

Thanks! Though I checked it out and it doesn't have some of the features that I'm looking for. Their website doesn't mention a lot about automated receiving processes, scanning in /out, barcoded pick lists. It doesn't look like it can import export data or generate a CSV report.

Order shipments would need to automatically be queued for shipping (print pick tickets) upon inventory availability including receiving of backordered or just in time inventory.

Do you know if atrex will be able to accept a batch of orders via EDI? Will I be able to import my inventory? Could I scan UPC's of new inventory versus manually entering in products?
