I would say it depends on volume.

If you have a lot of transactions, and some trading history, then a proper merchant account is the way to go.

PayPal is (unfortunately) popular with customers, so you probably have to offer it, but (IMO) any company just using PayPal often appears to be quite unprofessional and I may have concerns about trusting them to provide the agreed product/service (although PayPal would offer some level of protection to the customer in that instance).

You have to consider a number of things:
  • Am I offering the payment methods my customers prefer to use
  • Can the payment methods I'm using be automated - does my existing billing software support this and/or can support be added (e.g. write a new payment plug-in for it)
  • Is the payment method cost-effective for me to process, and are there any other drawbacks such as high risk of chargebacks etc.

Multiple methods of payment is always better. You can use paypal and still look professional as long as you offer a variety of payment methods to suit the customer.

The more payment options the merrier. Get a merchant account and paypal. Accepting credit cards / Paypal is probably 99% Of the online payment options used. Using checks to buy stuff online seems silly, and only a small percentage of internet users probably do it anyway. I'm actually working on a Ecommerce website to, and was wondering if it was easy to intergrate a merchant account / paypal into Oscommerce?
