Here is the deal.. I do Freelance Graphic Design/Web Design. A friend of mine has helping me get business. He has been getting a percentage of the total package price.. On the most recent project, he made about $600 and I made $400. Is this fair?? I certainly don't think it is...

Granted, I would not have the work if he didn't find it and secure the account.. However, I just don't think it is fair that he is making more money than I am, while I am the one doing 90% of the work. Can anyone else tell me how they handle this situation? How much should my friend be making, when he lands me a web project? 20%? 30%? Is there a better way to handle this situation?

Thanks

That is far from fair. I would say 20% or 25% at the most. I think 15% is fair depending on how big the projects are. But if you can't find business otherwise what are you supposed to do about it? Kick him to the curb?

If I think, my work is worth 10$ / Hour Or 25$ / Hour, then i demand that much. Never worried about how much money others make with my work.

Thanks for the replies.

Ok - the problem I have with per hour design rates is this...

Say I want to charge $25 and hour, and estimate a site at 40 hours.. That equals $1,000. At this point I would want to have the client sign a contract agreeing to pay the total amount. What happens then if the site actually takes 60 hours? Do I put a clause in the contract saying there may be a 20% difference in the estimated cost and actual cost? Or do I just swallow the bullet and accept less money?

Typically, I like to come up with a flat fee based on what the client wants - but I have run into similar problems doing this. What does everyone else do? Is there a better way to estimate website costs?

Thanks
