Hi Guys,

I've been a webmaster for sometime now, but never actually even thought until now to join a webmasters forum to find out answers to questions I've I am needing to know

So here goes my first question, it's a tricky one to explain, so please bare with me

Question-

When you have a domain name such as

(this is made up)
www.Ofinge.com

and I want to offer something to other sites, so I need to put their titles in the domain name/page I create for them

such as
www.wally.Ofinge.com

next client
www.healthproducts.Ofinge.com

Doing this, eventhough I'm making a page appear to be on their site, it's actually still on my bluefinger.com site, hence adding all the traffic they get, etc. etc. etc..

so my question is- Companies like Homestead.com, will allow you to make as many sites as you want, push publish and it comes up Wally.Homestead.com or Shelly.Homestead.com, even though the domain name is different, as long as it has .Homestead.com in it, it appears to show the traffic on their domain name Homestead.com

So how does this work? If you own a domain name, and leave your name in it, is it free when registering a new one, or are they paying for a new domain name for every person who is building their sites even though they know they will link that site to a different name in the next few days?

I need to sell pages in my site, put the clients name then .myname, so the stats all add up. But obviously I don't want to pay for a new domain name every time

AAAHHH it's hard to explain in text.
Any help would be appreciated

Short answer - The feature you are referring is a sub-doamin. You donot have to buy a new domain to setup a new sub-domain. When you buy hosting, just make sure that the plan you buy has unlimited sub-domains. The web-host will provide with you a Control panel, through which you can easily setup sub-domains.

Generally a subdomain uses additional DNS record changes like an added A record. There are ways (if you have root server access) to make a fake subdomain by having the webserver point the "fake" subdomain to an actual directory.

For example you could reconfigure your webserver to point this:
http://mysub.domain.com

To this: http://www.domain.com/mysub/

www.Google.com
maps.Google.com
news.Google.com

All of those are under the domain name Google.com, but with extra subdomains. They don't cost anything because they're not extra registrations, only, well, the folks above me already explained it better than I could.

And yes they count against your bandwidth (that's really a misnomer and s/b transfer allowance) because it's the same hosting plan.

Ok, need to know something else then,

So if my host gives me sub-domains (as my host does), then does this mean that I can start another website, using one of these sub-domains and all it's stats as it grows adds on to my actual domain names statistics?

And if yes, when it gets spidered by search engines do they look at it as a complete different site or a part of the main domain name site?

Once again, I hope I'm making it clear enough for you to understand what I'm trying to ask

Thanks in advance for any help
