Hey, i was just wondering how do people work out an appropriate price when selling things?

This is more of a question to people who take time on their work so that it has a quality control, not to the people who make somthing that has no real effect/personalisation to it (anyone can make a header, a footer and shove content between the 2)

This question is not just for web layouts tho, also with scripts and stuff

Thanks

My photography is very expensive when I sell it. I just sent an invoice for $5,000 although that included my copyright infringement surcharge.

Pricing is only part math. Figure out how long it takes you to make a site - and you said you spend extra time perfecting one - and it's pretty easy to see how many you can do in a week. How much money do you need to make per week to survive comfortably? Double that, and you have your base rate, what you can't afford to work for less than; assume you'll spend half your time "working" and half looking for customers. As time goes on, adjust this figure to match what it turns out to actually be, but until then 50/50 is a good starting point.

Now how much will the market bear? And what is your market; are you working locally or globally?

I had a friend who used to walk into meetings, introduce himself, take over the show, and go over all the fancy stuff he's done and can do for the client ... at the end of a presentation he'd ask what their budget was, think for a moment, and say "Yeah, I can do it for that."

To calculate your prices be sure you know the costs of doing business. Example: rent, utilities, comm, software, depreciation etc. = let's say $1000/month plus a salary for you of $2000 (I'm jut using round numbers here so bear with me). Let's set an hourly rate of say $25. You need to find 80 hours of work to break even.

Very simple analogy but you get the idea. Having a target you can measure against is a great help to knowing if your pricing is realistic.

Take note of the resources you used. Time alloted and the complexities of the project before you proceed with the pricing

Well i have a few psd layouts thats are currently uncomplete (a lil slow with photoshop lol).

Most of my layouts that i do are mainly css bassed and 90% of the time xhtml 1.0 strict, doesnt always taking a massive ammount of time to do just a fair ammount. Also i dont actually need to be making a certain ammount of money yet to survive, just getting an extra bit of money to help with student stuff and studies would be nice. Mabye ill take a wild gues with a layout some time and just rely on others telling me if its too much

Two points, or questions, or comments, or anything you want to call them:
  1. You don't need Photoshop to do layouts. If it's slowing you down, skip that step. Use html for mock ups, or Paint.net (I found out about that one from Whym, I think) or just a pencil and paper. I think a dude named Grandpawebmaster will lend you some ink.
  2. If you charge people $15 a page now because you're in school and don't really need to be making the big bucks yet, it's gonna be hard to raise your prices once you move out of the dorm and start having to come up with rent. You might need to ditch all your customers and start fresh. Maybe it's better to have a few less clients up front, paying you more, who are gonna stay with you as your career advances?
I could be wrong on all of this, of course, but them's my thoughts.

Yep Paint.NET - it's great as a free graphics program

Yeah I also think grampawebmaster can sell you ink - he's constantly banging on about ink exchange and sink exchange (renovation I think). He owns an ink swap shop

Im definatly sticking as far away from photoshop as possible, i can do things it just bores me that all, i find coding layouts in xhtml with css better for me.

Cheers for all the replies

Remember there are three types of clients in the world: crappy ones you want to avoid, decent ones, and really good ones that are loyal once you give them a reason to be. You'll run into clients who try to rip you off.

Someone will say "Hey, I need a web site, but it only needs two pages and don't worry, I'm not picky about the graphic layout." Then when you do exactly what they said and try to collect the extremely fair price you quoted, they'll say "Well this ain't right and it needs five more pages."

I don't even know if that bit of advice fits in with your thread. At first I was thinking by charging the market rate for your services you'd weed those (bad) clients out, but whatever you do, just be aware there are people out there who will take advantage of your hard work and good intentions. However you do it, avoid them.
