I'm a little disappointed they went with power consumption over speed, but otherwise I'm excited.

The models being released on Monday will max out at 2.2Ghz but they are supposed to hit 2.6Ghz by Q1 2008. Only the opterons are being relased right now so it makes since that power consumption is a priority. I'm sure once the FXs are relased you'll get your 120W of processing goodness.

You know I've always been an Intel guy, but competition is good for everyone. Intel said it will be until some time in 2008 before they have consumer 4-way workstations available. Bet this announcement will get them to hurry up!

Very cool! Any idea when this might find its way into a laptop?

According to AMD's roadmap the nextgen turions will be out Q1 of 2008, but not in a quad core until 2009. Details here: http://www.tgdaily.com/index.php?opt...6&currentPic=3

Aw ... 2009?

I've got a dead Alienware with a dual core Opteron. I really want another notebook, but I'm waiting for quad cores.

The ironic thing is I'm not a gamer. But I write server software from 9 to 5, and that means lots of multi-threading. The company I work for has a farm of web servers with four dual core Xeon chips apiece. My desktop at work has two Xeon dual cores and two sets of stripped raid drives; one for software, one for data. Once you go beyond the basic producer/consumer thread model, you need a better way to realistically test the code.

I've been using my laptop for web development and programming ever since I came to college and its not cutting it. It has a pretty decent AMD turion and it handles multithreading ok (usually running dreamweaver, smartFTP, and Opera) but the workspace is too small. I'm saving up for a dual socket 1207 motherboard, which will be compatible with both the 2000 series opterons and the new ones out on monday. Once I build my new system I'm going to get a couple of 20" monitors and never have to worry about constantly swapping between apps again.

i was reading a comparison between the AMD and intel chips that aresupposed to come out and it suggested that the intel ships have less power consuption and better performace...

I think right now the Intel chips, the Core 2 Duos, are a little bit ahead of AMD's Athelon dual core range. AMD had the lead for a while, and will take it back, then Intel will get it back from them... Both have strengths and weaknesses, and if you're doing development work, it might be really important which is which ... but at this point both are pretty amazing. Still, AMD's "hypertransport" feature does seems to work out really nice.

The AMDs have had the lead in power efficiency for a while now, especially in the 2U+ market. The AMDs released tomorrow should be even more efficient. All four cores will be able to adjust power consumption based on the need. So say you are only using a single thread, then only one core will be consuming full power.
