Anybody listened to the new album,
Finding Forever? I really didn't expect it to be any good at all, so I'm really surprised how much I like it.
I've always been kind of ambivalent about Common. I love him when he sings with De La Slow, but haven't liked most of the songs on most of his albums. That song,
Testify, from
Be, was one incredible, and deserved the song of the year award it won, but the rest of the album, I half regret having paid for. Of course that track was produced by Kanye West, who produced most or all of the new album.
So even with a cheesy name, and a cheesier title, and some really pop commercial music, I'm super impressed. It sounds really
different.
Unique. I almost slept on this one, but found it on sale for $10 at a local store, so I picked up a copy.
You should, too, if you like hip hop music.
Not rap, but hip hop. There's a difference. This album is topical, with Common's dad flowing about our fall from grace, from the dawn of history to
Virginia Tech. There are samples from Gil Scott Heron, Stevie Wonder, the Isley Brothers, Paul Simon, and more.
If I was smart, I would have made this a blog post, since I've done music reviews before. But I almost never heard this album, picked it up more like an after-thought. So I wanted to share my happy surprise at how good it is with everyone else.
