I've setup sending through a closed SMTP server. I've made sure that the email is formatted correctly and doesn't seem fishy in any way. Still, GMAIL insists on saying the emails generated by my photo hosting service are SPAM.

Does anyone have any insight or previous experience with fighting a problem like this?

You can test out the service at http://beta.blackfalconsolutions.com/ just put your email address in the box and upload an image. You'll receive an email once the picture hits our high speed network, from the email you'll be able to see the headers and the actual source of the message. If anyone can let me know their thoughts it'd be great.

Also I've only tested with a few private servers and gmail, so if you get your message in your inbox I'd love to know!

The issue is most likely due to a previous owner of your IP address sending out spam, and therefore the IP address getting blacklisted as a spam sender.

I know how you'll feel about this - it wasn't your fault that the IP got blacklisted and you're having to pick up the pieces so to speak. You could try speaking to your hosts about the issue, and they may be able to put you on another server, with a different IP

It must be something like that.
I tried it, and passed it through spamassassin, and it told me that your mail had 0 points.

It must be something else than the content.
But your server is not listed on spamhaus blacklisted spam server. I really don't know.

Thanks for the replies, glad to know it atleast gets through to some people. I'll put a notice on the site about the SPAM issues to let people know about the potential of things hitting that box.

I hate this and have this problem too, as far as i know gmail is a very tight thing.

i think any kind of auto email generally goes down as spam,

just think if you found a way to stop it being junked... so would the spammers...

Very true, I wouldn't use the service if it didn't catch 99% of my spam in the first place. So it makes perfect sense that something like this would run into that problem. Oh well, thanks to you all again.

And if you need a free image hosting service, mine is very simple to use and all files are on an extremely fast, reliable, and redundant service!

Sorry we couldn't help you more, Black Falcon. Actually I'll try your service, but I don't even have a digital camera so really all I can do is grab something GPL from Wikipedia and upload it to test for you. But I think it's what others have said, someone did something naughty with your IP. Your host should be able to migrate your site to a different box pretty easily.

I think he meant it's stored in more than one place, hopefully on two drives. That's usually what redundant means in tech? So if your mp3 files are stored redundantly on two drives, and one dies, you haven't lost your tunes.

No actually redundant (if I spelled that right) is correct. The network the images go on actually use multiple datacenters so that if one of the many many servers which run the file hosting goes down another one transparently picks up the traffic. Even if everything is running correctly across all servers on all datacenters the traffic is spread out to keep the speed of the service up. So all files are stored at all datacenters, thus you have file redundancy.

Thanks for the message Gallastico, the only problem is I don't want people to have to check their SPAM folder in the first place.
