OK my opinion of Windows as a whole has, of late, been fairly poor but today has just clinched it for me. I was in the middle of a game (admittedly not a very good one), when the screen freezes for a second, then I see a flash of the blue screen of death and then the PC restarts for no apparent reason.

Of course, this isn't enough for Windows. Out of the frying pan and into the fire - when I log on, it says "please activate Windows" - what on earth? I've been using the computer for a year or so, and its a completely legal version, and now for some random reason, I'm told to activate Windows.

I decide to go ahead and activate it but then it tells me I have to activate via a dial-up connection, even though the LAN is plugged in. Grrr Microsoft is rubbish, end of. I'm sticking with my Mac

Wow, that's bizarre. I've never heard of anything like that. Did you get it working in the end?

I hate windows... I bought a MAC portable but have Linux Ubuntu at home...I had to get the MAC with Intel Core Duo so I could run the very few Windows programs I need. All I'm waiting for is the day all the software I need will be available on Linux or MAC and I'm over it...

If operating systems were cars.

Macs are nice powerful stable machines.... But I wouldn't be able to use them on 95% of the roads.

Linux is wonderful... But the average user needs to be a mechanic and finding appropriate fuel is a mess.

Windows is for the guy who just wants to drive... But the you can only have 1 driver, need to be the verified owner to deploy the airbag and the CD player may or may not work.

Nope I haven't bothered with that. I can use my Mac for just about everything. I think I'll eventually be able to fix it (probably).

I'm guessing that if I downloaded and burnt Linux to a CD, then I could access my files like that, so I expect that might be something I'll look into.

Ok. i have to disagree with this analogy (is that the right word?)

My version:

If OS's were cars.

Mac would be the the pimped up fiesta owned but the 17y.o who has been banned twice because he thinks he can drive and doesnt get why the pavment isnt suitable.

He has spent thousands pimping his car.

Linux would be the batterd race car with thousands on the clock and plenty more to come! accept if the driver dont know what they are doing they will crash and burn in the side barrier.

PC is your adverage car. everyone can drive it some dream of a more usable car but will usually end up sticking to the plain old car.

Personally i think that fits it better :P

Well you've both given your analogy - here's mine:

If Operating systems were cars:

Mac would be the hip new car such as a mini in the fast lane, who only needs servicing once a year and isn't going to slow down any time soon. It's an all-singing, all-dancing car with a bright future.

Linux would be the car owned by enthusiasts - lots to tweak, but lots that could go wrong.

Windows would be the tired out old workhorse - even though it was just a year old. It's slow and battered and it repeatedly crashes into anything it possibly could do. It tends to go wrong under the bonnet every day. It also asks for you to verify you are not running a counterfeit engine for no apparent reason, and suspects all of its owners are potential criminals

hehe at least with Windows if your a "crimal" you know how to tell it to stop checking XD Nice N easy

It is like with Vista,
You can install it without a serial/activation it gives you 30 days (with reminders) and then it will go into low thingy mod where basically it has no functions

But, if you know how you can extend this period indefinatly... so erm you dont need to activate...

I would aggree with most of people here that Windows is pretty bad. The only problem is that most people that make programs make them for Windows. If only I could find a program that would make all Windows and Mac programs work seamlessly into Linux, then I would install Ubuntu on all of my computers right now.

Unfortunately, all of the programs out there right now aren't quite what you would call "seamless".

I use Linux on my own machines but my work Laptop runs XP. I think one thing that hold Linux back is the lack of a good graphics program. The GIMP just isn't as good as Photoshop, IMO.

I aggree. I've tried doing some of the stuff in GIMP that I can do in Photoshop, and I just could get it to do it right. It's a good program to use if you just want to edit a couple of photos and maybe add a few effects, but if you really want a good graphic design program you need Photoshop.

Unfortunately, Photoshop only works on Windows and Mac. Just another way that the big companies work together to make more money.

I disagree. Windows would be a knackered old tractor. Mc would be a sports car. Linux would be a kit car.

Everyone really hates MS... Lol

Im one of these people who like to find out why things are bad before i say the crap (know what i mean?)

Like i know that windows is bad because it gets viruses.. this is because it holds like 90% of the market and virus makers just dont bother making them for macs and linux.

If mac was a market leader to the extent of MS i would garentee it would have viruses like MS..

mac have a really small market share, its only like 3% or something. I think thats because they overprice.

how easy are macs to update and upgrade performance wise?

They are only just starting to be compatible with i think it is intel boards. when Macs are able to be installed on virtually any board or set up (like windows and linux...) and the Mac OS is sold like windows is then im sure the use of mac OS will sky rockets.. many users (especially power users) will buy it just to try it out.
