What version of Linux to you guys recommend. I plan on running apache, mysql, and php on it as a server. I don't have a lot of experience with linux, I've installed and played around with Suse and red hat a long time ago.

I've read that mandrake is user friendly for use as a server and I've also heard good things about debian, so I'm leaning toward one of those.

I have used Red Hat since 5.0, Slackware, Ubuntu, Gentoo and Debian. I now use Debian. The installs and upgrades are easier. So are security updates.

I used Open-SuSE at college a couple of days ago and I have to say I was very disappointed with it - it looks ancient and reminds me of Windows 3.1 (yes I have used that )

I haven't tried Red Hat or Ubuntu but they are both recommended a lot by people in the know so I'd test one of them out if I were you.

For a production server I would stick to either Red Hat or Debian. Simply because they seem to be the most stable longest running systems used. For your own use pick one that you feel comfortable with and run with it.

I think Ubuntu is the most noob-friendly distro out there.
Plus, they have an extremely helpful community forum.

I think I'm going with debian. The dvd ISOs are taking forever to download, so I'll let you know how it goes when I get it installed.

Lackofthought, you live up to your name. You say you came here to learn, but you drop spammy links and then start insulting people (I know of at least 2 times this happened - once to me, once to someone else). Now you're bribing people.

You've been banned so you can't reply, but if there are any other spammers thinking of doing something similar, don't. It could result in a ban.

Please don't hijack threads either. Back to the original question...
