How much of the internet is pornographic??

Well well guys, i saw this fact on the discovery channel the other day, and the question asked was as follows?
How much of the internet is taken up by Pornographic material?
So what do you think is the answer guys, i guessed at 20% - the real answer, 62.4%
Unbeleivable ay??

I don't know whethere 62.4% is accurate but it certainly accounts for a siazable amount. The volume of porn on the net is surely down to supply and demand, that's why it's so high.

yeh, i thought it was a very high number, but the discovery channel is a huge tv channel available all over the world, and therefore, i am inclined to trust their figures.

I would have said around 80...
But seriously, what is their source to say something like that.
Cause I can tell that through my server, the only porn that pass is those ViaGr@ mails...

That can't be right, Andy. The vast majority of web hosts and bandwidth providers don't even allow adult content in the first place for moral, religious, and "we don't want any controversy" reasons.
I would have said 25, maybe 30%, but I'm not prepared to accept 62.4%. That's too high.

Just because an estimate was on television, doesn't make it true, or accurate. What show (and "experts") gave that guess? There are billions of web pages out there, and I find it hard to believe that they could come up with a legitiment, specific percentage (62.4%).
My initial reaction would have been between 30-35% (Although this range is just a shot in the dark). |

I also find those numbers hard to believe. After googling for the percentage of
porn on the internet, I found varying numbers and 12% was the most common.
But, nowhere near the 62.4% the Discovery Channel claims.

This may be another one of those things where pornographic means one thing to me and another thing to the Discovery Channel.
My estimate may have been higher, but Adam's estimate might have been lower. It's all in how they define pornographic.
Oh, I wasn't suggesting that Adam looks at porn, or maybe I was.  J/k!

I think it also depends how they depend %. Is that by the number of sites or pages? By revenue? Bandwidth...?
Adam has a point, although I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were some large data centers hosting their own porn with high end connections. It's big business - dominates in photography.

I have known the balance is 2/3 porn i thought it was common knowledge.
While yes most webhosts you come accross when you google webhost does have a no porn policy.
ALOT of them if you look closer accept porn as long as it is legal in their states etc.
and if you look (i havnt) there are thousands of hosts dedicated to selling space for it.
And because it is such a big thing it seems many "webmasters" who speicalise in it usually have dedicated servers and host thousands of the bleeders at a time.

Yes i do agree with you on this, thats why i mentioned in my first post that i couldnt beleive the figure would have been anywhere near that high!

It was a figure given out on the Discovery Channel Europe. where their sources came from, i dont know! i also do not beleive that its a figure which is anywhere near the true estimate! |

Statisticly you will find a porn link somewhere on a google search (if oyu have filter off) no matter what you type...
I am gonna have to try and find a reliable source to show you lot

I've found that when I search for ANYTHING with Japanese characters something nasty but enticing appears. This happened when I searched for such seemingly inocuous words like "Fish," "Book," or "Rice." So never search in Japanese at work. The Japanese internet seems stuffed with pornography, at least.

I guess so. i mean for some who is armish seeing the leg above the knee cap would probably be just as exciting for him than you looking at a topless woman (or man) but we wouldnt bat a eye lid...
Yea sorry for the religious stats i will have to look for some more erm scientific sources for the figures...
But i dont really want to be caught googling Pornography Statistics.... o.0

True.
Growing up in Germany, I saw topless women at the local schwimmbad all the time.
Heck, I even saw nudity in tv commercials. It was no big deal. Totally acceptable.
But here in the States, it's all turned around. I see violence on tv that I never would
have seen on German tv. But, No...don't show any boobies or you'll get in trouble!!!
