The volcano "theory" is certainly in part true - volcanoes emit huge quantities of CO2. There's also the theory about the solar activity.
I'm not a huge fan of conspiracy theories, but this makes a bit of sense - with the hype about climate change and going green, a new job was invented - the eco-journalist. Their job is completely dependent on them making ever more extreme predictions about the future so that's what they do.
I recommend that you watch this video, even if you decide it's a complete lie:

But can you back this up, or point to any science on it? Or tell why the carbon sinks don't factor into the volcano theory?

No doubt. Although I'd say this is really nothing new. Think of the terrorism journalist, the war journalist, the nuclear journalist, the disease and famine journalist. The nuclear journalist who writes about Chernobyl takes a salary for his job, but that doesn't make the meltdown a conspiracy.
We've heard extreme predictions about the genocide going on in Darfur - is that reason to believe it's not true?
I'll watch the YouTube video you suggested, and I'll do so with as open a mind as possible, remembering who suggested it. But that won't happen until after 5 pm. I can't watch videos at work without disturbing my neighbors.
In the meantime, though, I've brought up many factual and logical arguments that are pretty compelling, and lead me to believe virtually all the world's scientists are correct. Nobody has addressed any of these. I respect that people look at the same evidence and find different conclusions, as long as they do it in a way that's consistent with logic and not with schizophrenia. I truly want to know how people who's smarts I respect see these facts and correlations and think "100 % unrelated" ?
All of us believe in dinosaurs, even though none of us have ever seen a living one. Based purely on science, and a lot of it the same type of science that's behind global warming. All of us believe in the internet, even though it involves quantum mechanics. All of us believe in gravity and heavier than air flight and space exploration. So where's the disconnect?

Newbie, I'm just suggesting that we should keep an open mind on global warming, rather than jumping on the mass media bandwagon and declaring we'll all be dead in 50 years!
In the 70s, people were suggesting we were heading for an ice age. They were wrong. We can't be sure YET that we're heading for massive changes in global temperature in 30 years.

I agree that people can keep an open mind, but I wish somebody could share with me the reasoning that takes an open mind and leads it to any other end?
Nobody I know has suggested we'll all be dead in 50 years. ( Although in my 40s, I may be.) With much respect, it seems appropriate to refer you to the definition of a straw man argument: it's easy to refute the notion that humanity will be extinct in 50 years, but no one is suggesting that. What people are suggesting is that life will be far less pleasant, especially for people in "the 3rd world". The drought that's been gripping the US south east is a great example.

No!!! They were right! That's something that Global Warming Deniers have been saying forever, and it's been debunked over and over and over again. The planet was fast cooling, and it was because there were trillions of microscopic particles in the air blocking sunlight from reaching the planet, reflecting the warmth back to space. We identified the problem, we fixed the problem, the problem went away.
That strengthens the arguments raised by climate scientists using the same science, not weakens it. My hope is that we'll be able to avert this looming catastrophe in the same way.

You probably took me too literally when I said we'd all be dead in 50 years. It's the sort of extremist claims I hear from over-the-top green freaks (i.e. people who are fanatical about all of this).
I stand by my statement that IF man-made global warming is real (I still believe the jury is out on that), then the Western countries have to do everything themselves, rather than shifting the blame onto poorer countries. I'm not directing this at you at all, simply repeating my statement on where I'm at with this whole scenario. You might find it interesting that I used to be very green minded myself, but after watching that film and taking a step back, I've become less so. I'm for us doing what we can to save the planet from pollution etc. etc., but I'm unsure about human CO2 emissions and all that.

I have many American friends and I know that most Americans are sensitive and caring people and they would never squat so low and use unwarranted tactics to put person reputation down and throwing punches below the belt. I said "ONLY" and not "ALL" (and they know who they are) would stoop to lowest level of human behavior and if exposing them for what they are is racism, then so be it and I will proudly point my finger in the face of bigotry every time I see it to the rest of my life.
SeanB had 3 choices and he could
- prove me being wrong
- ridicule/critic my post on merits
- ignore my post all together
but instead he took swing at me personally.
I don't know why you are so kind to person who went beyond borders of human decency and why you are taking his side but I know, and I am not only one, that most of you as well had your stomachs turned up side down reading SeanB’s essay of intolerance.

As to climate, it maybe only hype created by the media but lets stop for one moment and think. Even if we all wrong and no skies are falling, at least not now, what kind of future we are going to leave to our children, if as I said, we all wrong but in opposite direction.

fastreplies, thanks for the negative Talkupation. From you that's a compliment.
I'm not going to return the favor as I don't think you need negative feedback for people to see your posts have little, if any value. My time is too valuable to waste any more of it in conversation with you.

Please don't insult each other any more - continuing this argument could land both of you with infractions.... Leave it at this.

It's time to close this thread. I was hoping for a big group hug, but it looks like animosity instead. I'll still be watching the video Whym suggested after work, and I think it's an important discussion that I would love to see followed up on. But not here if it's going to lead to bad blood between a lot of very smart, helpful people who we're lucky to have.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind that group hug still, but I guess there is too much anger and tension here for it to be possible! lol.
To non-mods, please don't continue posting in this thread now - an admin or moderator of this particular forum will be along soon enough and close it.
