I am planning to start a new website. My old website (theitkgroup.net) died three months ago because my Free Host was not ready to host my site for more time. The domain might work, but will redirect to mihalism.com (my free host).

Now, my own PC is a mini-Server. I am going to use to for my website.

Query #1:

What is the topic on which i should start a site ?

Query #2:

Which CMS should I use ? Or i should build my own ?

Query #3:

What are the minimum MUST features of a CMS ?

Thats all is in my mind for now. I will post more when i get it to my mind.

Please answer my 3 Queries above.

Number one really depends on what you're interested in. Are you trying to make money? Is it just for personal interest? Are you just trying to learn the ropes and you want a site to design for the experience? Two and Three depend on one.

I need a topic which will give me nice amount of traffic. Also, I will make money using AdSense. How about Open-Source, Linux, etc ?

Unless you have a sufficient connection speed, I wouldn't host your website on your PC.

The topic of your website is totally up to you. We cannot suggest one for you, that is all part of making a website. I suggest a topic that you are interested in because you will find it easier to write content and more likely to be interested in it.

I have a 150 Kbps Unlimited connection.

I get about 70-80 Kbps Upload speed and download speed of about 135 Kbps (not reqd for server as content is uploaded to browser cache )

I’m no expert when it comes to web hosting, but I wouldn't even dream of hosting a web server on them sort of speeds.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but lets assume you allow someone to connect to your website and you set the max download speed at 64k. In other words they cannot download files from your web server no faster than 64k. Now with your 80k upload you can have one person downloading from your web server at any one time without any problems. However, a second person connects and starts to download a file. The speed with two people connected now drops to 40k per connection. Then a third person connects, and so the connection speed drops even more, and so fourth until your connection slows to a crawl. Web hosts normally have faster connections to how come this.

Now assuming this doesn't happen, the next question to ask is do you have a static IP address?

As others have said there's a lot more involved - my advice is to use a proper host that's geared up to run secure and fast servers.

The best advice is to choose a subject you are interested in, if you don't you will may quickly lose interest.

Why do you need to use a CMS specifically? Whether or not you need one will depend on what sort of site you make.

Security, flexibility and a good templating system!

What you say is right. But i will not have people downloading files from my server!!!! I will host my files (if any) on some other Public Share like zshare, savefile, primeupload, etc.

And, you don't worry about hosting for me!!! I will do what i want in that matter.

@blue

Thanks for tips.

Sorry to bring this up, but you stated that you will be using your PC as a mini server. So why/how are you hosting files on zshare, savefile etc?

BTW, I'm not trying to sell you hosting or anything on that matter, I'm just trying to help.

Dude, i meant any types of downloads. I currently have a 150 Kbps connection. I will earn money from referrals and adsense. When I accumlate required money from those, i will upgrade my connection to a greater level.

And, i meant download files and not content files
