The training courses my security compay offers suggest 18" away from the screen, looking away at a fixed object for a few seconds every 20 minutes on average. I'll have to find their source.

The course also suggests that the heels of the hands should be elevated above the keyboard to ease tension on the fingers when typing. I'll tell you, my hands feel a lot better for so doing....

And, hey, my vision's 20/15, and I'm in decent shape, but anything I can do to keep that being the case as long as possible....

I think eyestrain and related issues have reduced as monitor technology has improved, but I still think it's an issue.

At my last job, we had old 15" CRTs using a "custom application" that was white text on a blue background for the bottom half of the screen, and then white for a scanned image (I can't reveal much more than that) on the top half of the screen. This was about 10-15 years behind the times even then, and I quit that job in 2002.

The eyestrain was freakin' BRUTAL. It's the only time where I've ever had to take breaks from using my computer. I remember one day where I was forced to work 14 hours, the last 6 with no break whatsoever (and no one bothered to help me or did anything about it). I drove home from work at midnight, and while I was driving, I remember my eyes bugging out of my head and that I couldn't stop smiling (looked in my rearview mirror and scared the hell out of myself, too)! I wasn't happy. I was incredibly tired. But I looked like I had heard the best joke in the history of the universe.

I walked in the door of the house I was living in at the time, and my landlord was at the top of the stairs.

"Adam, where the hell have you been?"
"Working."
"Oh bullS**T! You smoked crack, didn't you, you bastard?"
"I WISH I smoked crack. I wouldn't feel like crap right now."
"Oh come on. You look like the Joker from Batman."
"Dude, I'm serious. I just finished working 10 minutes ago."

He never believed me. But he never judged me, either. So I guess it worked out okay.

I should also explain that I do wear glasses. But unlike most people, my problem isn't with my eyes. It's with my brain. Most people's brains merge eye signals together, whereas mine keeps them separate. But this happened long before I started using computers on a frequent basis (I've had the problem since I was about 12).

You weren't building computers out of spare parts when you were 12? I thought you were like the McGuyver of the internet.
