It's architectural Viagra. That's the only way to explain it.
Personally, I think the thing is dumb. The CN Tower isn't really a monument or a tourist attraction as such anymore, and it's been the highest building since before I was born. (Then again, Toronto as a tourist destination is losing appeal.)
I think a lot of them are so tall partly because they're built in places where real estate is ridiculously expensive. But I'm sure a lot of it is showing off; the Burj Dubai's height is being kept a secret, and there are plans to change the plans if anyone else builds a competing sky scraper...
They should start putting emergency parachutes in buildings. 2000 feet is nearly half a mile.
I see a documentary a while back about what buildings will be like in a couple of hundred years. Some architects are saying that eventually buildings will be so tall that the top floor will get hours extra sunlight a day than the bottom and people living at the top will have to plan journeys to the bottom like we plan road trips today. People will work and shop in the building and will hardly ever leave. it will also need to be airtight and pressurised. They say the bases of these buildings could have a foot print at much as 4 square miles.
Imagine living at the top of a building so tall that you could see the curvature of the earth.

I don't think that would work. The updrafts around buildings of that height would likely smack you into the building or snap your neck. I don't know that for certain, but I doubt it'd be too safe.

Arthur C. Clarke would be proud.

I mean in cases of fire. I know what id rather do if i had a choice between burning to death and doing a risky base jump.
