Forrest, I've greatly enjoyed seeing the pics you've shared, and it's inspired me to offer a few I'd just taken....
These were taken just recently in the Great Smokey Mountains around Cherokee, NC, just as the leaves were beginning to change.
These are not retouched in any way, only reduced in size and filesize:
Hope you like!

Wonderful! Now I don't have to feel like I'm hogging the spotlight.
These are really beautiful. I like the middle one - the vertical - from the traditional artistic standpoint, good composition and depth and all that. But the third one is really wild. It looks like a grave yard for trees, almost like an ancient fire. The Tim Burton like twists in the trees is very cool.
Looks like there should be an eagle or a hawk sitting on one of the branches.

Thanks, Forrest.
The trees in the third pic are spruces that suffered from an invasion of some kind of European insect; don't know what kind, though.
I should have been so lucky to have a hawk or eagle perching there. Oh, well....

All you need is a zoo and a tranquilizer gun, my friend...
Insect invasion ... that must have been pretty devastating.

Great pictures!
Interesting about the bug thing in the 3rd picture. I was thinking that it looked like a fire came though and killed the tall trees and the littler ones grew up around the dead ones. But I wasn't sure if dead trees would stand long enough for new trees to grow around them.
yeah, so anyway, thanks for sharing!

I have to say, fastreplies, I like this one: http://www.amray.com/graphics/pic36.jpg
Tim - I saw part of 60 Minutes tonight, a special on forest fires. They were talking about the one in Yellowstone, and a lot of the bad ones lately. Some of the scenery after the fires looks a lot like your photo. It's pretty incredible.

I try to go out there whenever I have the chance.
The third shot, I should have mentioned, is taken from Clingman's Dome, the highest point on the Appalachian Trail.

I was kind of wondering about that ... those look like serious ridges. How do they look in the winter?

Oftentimes these parts get too treacherous to even try to get to, and I've elected not to add myself to the list of enlightened individuals who think they can navigate around here because they could where they came from. We have a word for them: Casualties.
