A gnu is a wildabeast. However, in an elementary school, the administration decided that none of their students were likely to understand what a gnu was, and that the intent of the dyslexic child was to come to school armed with a toy gun. Can you blame them for not waiting for tragedy?

Even in our overly-litigious society, were I this child's parent I would sue the school board, and would likely win. This is a blatant abuse of authority, and I personally deal with enough real dangers in schools.....

Not only is it abuse of authority, it is discrimination. As the parent of a child with a learning disability, I can tell you that had that child not been diagnosed with dyslexia he would not have been suspended. That is discrimination. I agree with you Tim,

I had to read this 3 times and I am not sure what it means.

So they think the dyslexic kid was reading the student handbook and saw that you can't bring a toy gun to school. So, since the kid is dyslexic, he thought it said a toy gnu. So he thought be would be funny and bring a gnu to break the rules? Then, since the school board thinks he misread "gun", he broke the rules, even though he didn't really bring a gun or anything that slightly resembles a gun to school.

And again....What?!?!?!

This is completely insane!!!

It's sort of like gullible.org. A gnu is a wildabeast, but if you're dyslexic and get the order of the letters wrong, it could be confused for a gun. I don't know if they have any rules about whether or not a student can bring a wildabeast to school, but you can't bring a gun (unless you're a teacher in Oregon).
