This has probably been done before, but I wanted to discuss it. What ar your opinions on it? Is it a secret cult or a belief that should be recognized officially as a religion?

What's the difference between a cult and a religion? That sounds like an annoying stupid question, but it's really not. Don't Jews consider us Jesus followers a cult? I mean, we have the Old Testament, but that was all changed with the arrival of the Messiah.

Although my personal belief is that neither Scientology nor Mormonism is a true religion. Scientology is a science fiction story by a science fiction writer, and Mormonism isn't Christianity. It's Joseph Smith worship.

I'd agree with what you said there.

There are a number of different cults/styles/types of Christianity etc. that I don't agree with, or I don't consider mainstream anyway. I'm not saying I hate the people - that would be prejudice. I'm just saying I'm not keen on their ideas. These include:

* Mormonism - a corrupted sort of Christianity with a number of quite obvious flaws and mistaken ideas. (I.e. Jews in America, Jesus in America etc.)
* Jehovah Witnesses - similarly a few flaws and strange ideas.
* Free masonry - many say this is devil worship. Whether true or not, the idea of a secret society that only help each other is not a fair or good idea. It certainly doesn't seem to be compatible with mainstream Christianity, even though there are many Christians involved in it.
* Finally, Scientology. It's not actually a form of Christianity but it's ideas are very strange and I don't feel it should be recognized as a formal religion. The BBC panorama documentary on this showed them up a lot and ex-members certainly have a lot of negative things to say about it.

Scientology is a mass hysteria supported by seemingly intelligent people who believe in after life utopia.

It surely not religion but rather philosophy created by some conniving charlatans to replace mainstream religions and to gain some financial benefit while it last.

You may safely call it cult

From someone who's parent was sucked into Scientology - it's a cult.

They believe:

If you get sick it is only because someone is oppressing you, not because you contracted a virus and that as soon as you acknowledge who is oppressing you, decide not to allow them that power, you are magically all better.

If you study L. Ron Hubbard's teachings under the guidance of "auditors" you can become "God-like", you can effect other peoples lives, the future, read people's minds, effect nature, etc. They have ratings for how far you have gone in the studies. If my memory serves me it's called OS (hehe).

They also have a meter, something like a lie detector machine that they hook you up to that supposedly will test your OS level.

People that work for Scientology on all but the most senior of levels are expected to give their lives (and life savings) to it without compensation. My mother was heavily involved in Scientology & Dianetics when I was a teenager. She was so involved she ended up being the Asst Dir of the Phx, AZ "org" as they called it. We went to the headquarters in LA.

From a vastly educated opinion - Scientology is a dangerous cult that intelligent people who are lacking something fundamental in their lives are easily sucked into.

Thanks for the information. I've watched a few YouTube videos (some biased, some unbiased) on the topic and I did a bit of reading about it - don't worry, I'm not sucked in or anything - I just want to find out what sort of stuff they believe.

From what I've seen and read, they believe that a galactic emperor was being troubled with overpopulation in our galaxy and decided to dump a species on our Earth. He then supposedly caused some volcanoes to blow up and wiped out this species. Their spirits now inhabit everything - living and inanimate - and cause many of the problems in the world around us. The guy who started it also became very rich from it....
