From someone who's parent was sucked into Scientology - it's a cult.
They believe:
If you get sick it is only because someone is oppressing you, not because you contracted a virus and that as soon as you acknowledge who is oppressing you, decide not to allow them that power, you are magically all better.
If you study L. Ron Hubbard's teachings under the guidance of "auditors" you can become "God-like", you can effect other peoples lives, the future, read people's minds, effect nature, etc. They have ratings for how far you have gone in the studies. If my memory serves me it's called OS (hehe).
They also have a meter, something like a lie detector machine that they hook you up to that supposedly will test your OS level.
People that work for Scientology on all but the most senior of levels are expected to give their lives (and life savings) to it without compensation. My mother was heavily involved in Scientology & Dianetics when I was a teenager. She was so involved she ended up being the Asst Dir of the Phx, AZ "org" as they called it. We went to the headquarters in LA.
From a vastly educated opinion - Scientology is a dangerous cult that intelligent people who are lacking something fundamental in their lives are easily sucked into.
