Retroactive Acronyms

It turns out acronyms have only been around for the past 100 years or so, but people have adapted several much older words to become acronyms. - Yahoo, from Gulliver's Travels = Yet another hierarchal object oriented (whatever comes next)
- Wiki, from Hawaiian = Wish I knew it
- Cream, I think from Persian = Cash rules everything around me
- Adidas, probably a made up word = All day I dream about sex
- KRS-One, a rapper = Knowledge reigns supreme over nearly everthing
Can you think of more?

The name Adidas is a contraction of the name of their inventor, Adi Dassler. Geez, that acronym for it has been around since I was in junior high, probably before.

These came from the military, no big surprise:
SNAFU (didn't know that was an acronym, did ya?) Originally stood for Situation Normal, All F'd Up. Was used to describe a habitual error, then just fell into common usage as a word.
FUBAR (F'd Up Beyond All Recognition/Repair) And I've heard this one begin to seep into the civilian population as well. FUBAR was a later term, SNAFU has been around since WWI, I believe.

Have you seen the Private Snafu cartoons, produced for the WW 2 soldiers, narrated by Dr Seuss?

Quite honestly, I haven't. Where would I even find them? Are they in print on DVD or archived on the Web somewhere?

A friend of mine who loves animation lent them to me on DVD. It's mildly amusing without the history, but downright fascinating when you look at it in context. Stories about a young private who keeps f---- fouling the situation all up. One episode has the guy telling his girlfriend about something they were doing the next day, with spies listening in the next room. Another about rumors growing out of proportion and driving everyone who pays attention to them mad with fear.

Sounds pretty cool. If it's still in print I'll find it.

Sounds interesting. I'm a Dr. Sues fan. Also love Silverstein. He's got a book out I'd like to get called Around The World.
Speaking of Acronyms, I saw a cool game where someone starts with an acronym and then writes another word for the next person to come up with an acronym for it. I'm sure some pretty creative stuff would come of it.
