Are forums dead?
|

I was hearing this rumor a year or two ago when Myspace was in its prime - and people thought Myspace was taking their audience (which isn't true) and I'm sure this discussion took place a while ago here on TAZ, but I decided not to bring up an old thread (gravedigger), but instead make a new thread where all the new comers - and the old folks can discuss...
So, are forums dead or will they never die off? We know forums are known for exchanging information - faster than emails, and making friends, but what if... forums had a crash and fell off - what would be the reason?
Forums that tend to die off - are ones that shouldn't have been popular in the first place in the owners / staff members got lucky on becoming a big community, however; one false move can make or break your community (sitepoint, anyone?)

Na I certainly would not say forums are dead, I would say there are to many forums and that the amount is always growing, problem with this is that the more forum there are the more people get spead into diffrent ones and the less active they are.
Aslong as the forum has good members and useful infomation on them then they are very very srtong still.

Forums will always be around. There will be more features and options added, but
the need will still be there.
However, johneva has a point. With hosting being cheaper and more user-friendly
scripts being released, it's easier than ever to start a forum. They're sprouting up
much faster than they were 10 years ago.

I own a forum (currently having hosting issues), and I can say building and maintaining it isn't easy. The ones that die off could occur for a number of reasons, members find a better forum, owner just doesn't care anymore, put more effort into it, etc.

That's not always true, look at DP.

Like what other forums?
Are you wondering which forums will die in the future, or why the ones that already died, did?

It’s all depending on how you define dead.
If Zombies keep living after death, then DP is alive

I think forums are getting more and more popular. Most people now use the Internet and when someone needs help or has a question they usually do a search on Google. Half the time a forum will come up in the list of results and therefore people might join up.
Happens all the time with a car forum I frequent.

I think social forum's will die off like entertainment forums because of sites like myspace, youtube, bebo etc. but webmaster and graphic design forums will always last as not everyone know's about making website's or ever had the need to start one for those that use webmaster and graphic design forums are not going to find help on a site like bebo.

In my opinion, forums will die when the interest wane off. People only come to furm if there is something for them.

I disagree with Odysseus, but what I think we will see is forums change the way they are designed and interact with users. I think you will see an amalgamation of blogs with forums, so that users can run individual conversations with individuals they like and know, and also allow for public comment on things beyond their personal circle of friends.
