You can't just say "I want to build a Youtube/Facebook/Myspace/X site", snap your fingers, download a few Open Source gadgets and think you'll have the next big thing. It doesn't work like that. Never has, never will.
The good sites are good not just because of their general concept, but because of the amount of subtle customizations and things that have gone into them, things that the plugins miss completely.
In other words, come up with an original idea and stop trying to copy the popular ones.

I'd have to agree to a certain extent but there are plenty of real world examples of successful sites that use component based software. Checkout www.siteuptime.com. They weren't the first to think of that concept and they use the software "AlstraSoft Site Uptime Enterprise". I understand PR means nothing but I am sure the site owner does decent. It's no YouTube, but siteuptime.com is one of the more popular monitoring services in my opinion.
There's also the hundreds of thousands CMS based sites to take into account. Some of these sites are successful because they are using CMS and component based systems.
Not everyone's goal is to start the next YouTube or Myspace or to sell their solution to google for 6 billion. Rather their goal is to create a site that works using software concepts bigger sites like YouTube and MySpace have already established.
YouTube and MySpace took off cause they had programmers who developed the best software for an already thought of idea. They didn't think of an original idea. The concept of hosting videos online and creating personal web pages wasn't an original idea YouTube and Myspace thought of. They just found a better way of doing it. It was already being done by thousands of users on the net. YouTube and myspace were just the first to create the best software to handle these already thought of concepts.
Now since YouTube has the best interface for sharing videos online and if that is what a customer requires, why reinvent the wheel?
For example... I have a church who wants to upload videos of their sermons to their website. Why not use a YouTube clone component for Joomla? There are tons on joomla's site. I'm not the best at everything related to web development and neither is anyone. There are programmers out there that can do things better than you and I both. Why not use their expertise, especially if they have an already created solution... one you can customize of course
