how do i download youtube videos to mpg format?

I see there are a bunch of Firefox extensions to do this but none of them work that I have tried so far.

Any ideas?

What I would do is download the .flv and convert it to the file extension I needed. You can also convert straight from a url. I used Media-Convert. It's easy and free. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but hope it helps.

thanks but that site doesn't work any longer. When I try to use that tool it returns the following:

YouTube direct download service is no more available. Sorry for this inconvenience !

It seems as if somehow Youtube is blocking this capability. Like I said none of the firefox extensions work that are supposed to work. I think youtube is blocking them somehow.

There's another tool that will do much the same thing, but it's made especially for YouTube (though I use Media-Convert for everything else).

This is not legal actually for the videos I expect you are downloading. There are firefox plugins that download videos and there are conversion programs that convert these.

Get the firefox DownloadHelper plugin - works a treat. I've just been using that in conjunction with Videora iPod Nano Converter (also free) to load up a load of stuff on the ipod nano's my kids are getting for xmas.

There is some servers that help to do it. You just enter the URL of the video and it downloads. But I don't remember now any

First, stop reviving 2 years old dead thread.
Second, use firefox, and install flashgot.

The next time you'll play a video on youtube, a small floppy will flash in the lower right corner of firefox.
1 click on it will pre-enter all needed informations into the download box.

you can download the video as flv or MP4 then you can use converter to convert it to mpg
