I thought it would be interesting to geet to know the educational background of all who are willing to share. I mean Jobs and Gates made it without college degrees, but thats not to say they didn't do a substantial bit of learning on their own.

Personally
I am a young(17) self -taught webdesigner
Unfinished online portfolio
Latest project--sneak peak--l(Still underdevelopment)links are going to change

I mainly learned and continue to learn through online tutorials.

Have managed to learn :

x/d/html css,
javascript
php-enough to get the job done and play around a little.
CMS - DRUPAL -wordpress -joomla...well once you get drupal the rest are pretty easy.
FLASH
Actionscript
Dreamweaver
Fontpage-started on this one
Fireworks
Photoshop

In my AP computer science class I'm expanding my knowledge of java

Well your turn list what you wish and also any books you have found helpful and any programs or languages you feel are beneficial.

Self-taught, and learned through experimentation and unconventional thinking.

The best advice I can give you is to go into IT as well as web design, and find the most technically non-savvy people to help as possible. If you can get your Grandma and Grandpa online and operating their own business (or at least an online extension of their existing business) and deal with the constant barrage of bizarre and way-out-in-left-field questions that require Uncle Fester to translate their Cousin It-speak...you'll be able to build anything.

In graphic design, self-taught.
In Web design, certificate program at NC State, and self-taught thereafter. Which is why I'm here, 'cause Web design's a continuous learning process. At least in graphic design, the tools may get better but I can still pretty much tell someone how to use Photoshop CS3 when I'm still using 7.0.

I'm completely self taught. In fact, formal education at one of our communist institutions of learning (re-education camps) can leave you with a belief system that says a stale piece of bread is better than a nice juicy steak. Nuh uh, not for me. Have a look at this video where I talk about the benefits of self education. Also useful for those who wanted me to post my picture.

How funny! I thought you were serious, lol!

Graphic Design, self-taught
Web Design, self-taught with a lot of help from WT

I'm a licensed insurance agent, hold a number of certifications and still have to go to school to maintain it BUT I don't use them. Instead I'm freelancing and enjoying a home based job which more accurately suites my needs at the moment.

Now that's like a Model T and a WRX! Atheist Claus got me a CS 3 license for the winter solstice, I'm in love.

I'm completely ignorant, which is to say self taught. I pay rent by selling my time as a software developer ... the old fashioned, come into the building and collect a salary method. I spend most of my free time on the trail with a camera, and since they've gone digital, that gave me a lot more reason to get involved with web technologies, which opened more doors professionally.

Adam's right to suggest learning IT in general ... the whole infrastructure computers work on. Both in isolation and together. The goal isn't to memorize everything, it's to build a coherent view of the system as a whole. When any type of need comes up, a broad map of the forest helps you know which trees to look at. But I'll go a step further: it was my curiosity of the world in general that peaked my interest in computers.

Exactly the same for me, I'm currently studying Information Resources in college, however for the most part, I'm self taught (I basically already know everything they're teaching in the classes, but they're required, so...... have to take them)

Self taught with the help of the Scottish, Australian, New Zealand and American schools and people. Only short time in USA though, thank goodness, see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1Szc...eature=related Thought it was so funny and I know it isn't typical, I do, really. Still learning though even here on Webmasters-Talk. The people are witty, knowledgeable and helpful.

I have an Associates degree in Graphic Design and have come to learn over the past three years that our "Web Design" classes were horribly wrong...Which is why just now am I learning with CSS layout and the importance of validation.

I think I still have some of my class instruction print outs that, if you read them, would make you want to throw up.
