I realize this is a strange desire, and I don't think I've ever heard of this in a hosted solution. Is it a case for a whole custom box? Or am I looking in the wrong spot?

The web server part needs to be ASP.NET 3.5 or at least 3.0 - I plan to use LINQ, and I'd really prefer F# over C# as a programming language. That means Java and C++ are out, and PHP or ASP Ancient are definitely out.

The backend should be Oracle. It's as much more powerful than SQL Server as SQL Server is than Clipper. I've downloaded the full version of Oracle but have only been able to use it on the one box, and only through iSQL. I've worked with it in the past, but I can't figure out how to make Oracle Networking happen at home, so I want to build a web site against it to learn more experience.

Microsoft still uses locks to make isolation work - Oracle uses versioning and garbage collection. What this means is when a SQL Server comes under pressure, row locks turn into range locks, and range locks turn into table locks. All of the sudden your scalability goes to zero. In a lot of other ways Microsoft is catching up. The difference between SQL Server 2005 and 2000 is made up 100 % of things Microsoft borrowed from Oracle, just like how Vista is 100 % things they took from Mac. Synonyms, messaging, internalized byte code, partitioning, and so on. Besides just giving me more Oracle experience, I can play with the current Oracle version and then already be familiar with everything coming out in SQL Server 2011.

Also, both Microsoft and Oracle make ADO.NET Providers - anybody know which one is better?
