Hello people,

"Whenever someone searches for the availability of a domain name through Network Solutions' website, the company immediately registers the name for itself, preventing other companies from selling it and forcing consumers to pay Network Solutions' expensive fees."

I was always worried that someone would do that, but my wife just insisted I was being paranoid. She always does. Just like she doesn't believe me when I say the Feds are breaking into our house in the middle of the night and stealing socks out of the drier.

Be careful when you read that, web-law. That's not what it appears to be on the surface, and it's certainly not a news story. It's the legal firm representing the plaintiff issuing a press release.

Which begs the question...why?

This has all the makings of a scare tactic designed to cover up a weak position and geared to get the registrar to settle out of court, rather than dragging the thing out. I've got no love lost for Netjerk Slowlutions, mind you; I think they're some of the biggest dirtbags going. But this suggests that the lawyers don't have 100% confidence in the case they're filing.

Yeah, it's old, and Network Solutions isn't the only company guilty of it. It's been such common knowledge that I've heard the advice to register your domain right then and there if you find it available, just in shop talk. This is the first I've heard of legal action against a company guilty of it, but apparently that's old news too.

Companies like Network Solutions don't actually buy - or lease, or any other term - the domain name like you would. They pay a very small fee to more like retain the name for a few days. For anyone who gets stuck in a situation like this, just wait it out, and get the domain name somewhere else.

Hello, I've submitted this little story just for fun... because I know this kind of things aren't new at all.

Nevertheless, if you have a great idea for a domain name... it would be wise to avoid some registrar tools, because in my experience some of them do this kind of automated things.

btw, Anyone bought a .asia domain?

Kindest regards,
Weblaw
