Hello Webmaster-Talk.

I have to hand out an e-commerce opinion survey for my marketing class. Instead of handing it out, I figured it would be better to copy and paste it here, and just let you fill in the blanks via replying to this thread.

DO NOT copy and paste the survey to fill it out, just reply back with your answers. I'll understand that your first answer will be for the first blank, second answer for the second blank, and so on and so forth..

Thanks for helping! Your deed will be rewarded.

I think this would have been better using some survey site. There are questions on there that a person may want to be confidential and are pertaining to privacy.

Also, submitting a survey the day the results are needed will probably not get you much help.

1. Male

2. 31 as of March 1.

3. IE7, FF 2.0.0.11, and Safari/Win 3.0.3. IE7 primarily.

4. I wouldn't say there's a consistent pattern here. Sometimes I go a year without making an online purchase (I pay my hosting bill every few months with a money order) and sometimes I buy things a couple of times per month.

I'd say maybe every 3-6 months on average, if I have to pick one.

6. Hosting, domain names, OOTP 2008, CDs, T-shirts, bumper stickers, and lingerie (hey, you asked.) No porn, though.

7. Good value...I wouldn't say good price applies because price is only one factor in the value equation. I look at the cost vs. benefit and buy the best product based on that ratio.

Not available in stores is a factor (e.g. Homestarrunner.com stuff).

Other: To test a host. I wanted to protect a domain name. I can't think of any other reasons.

8. $19.95 USD.

9. Submitted credit card online.

10. No. Most people don't know this, but credit cards in Canada come with built-in insurance protection, and the burden of proof falls on the merchant.

11. Yes.

12. I got to download what I wanted (OOTP 2008), install it on my laptop, and play it. So I was satisfied.

13. Yes.

Anything electronic, because 1) I buy a lot of RB stuff and I want to inspect it and 2) I have connections offline for things.
Food (I buy it that day when I want to eat it).
Anything that had to be shipped. Canadian shipping costs are disgustingly high, even at the "cheap" end.

14. Neither...I think there are too many bugs that still need to be worked out first before anyone can say one way or the other (at least from the Canadian viewpoint.)

15. In Canada:

High merchant discount rates
Payment processors who forget to renew their domain names
A lack of competition among payment processors
A lack of interest by banks in wanting to participate in e-commerce ventures
High reserve requirements
Shipping costs
Implementation of faux security measures (e.g. the inclusion of a credit card name...some processors don't even look at this)
International restrictions on credit card processing (e.g. some US banks block Canadian payment processors, and justifiably so, due to the large amounts of Viagra and gambling transactions that come from here)

16. I'd just like to say that, having worked with different processors on both sides of the border, that the e-commerce idea has moved much further along in the States than it has in Canada. The MDRs are lower, the barriers to entry are fewer, and the payment processor APIs are like night and day.

Who uses Netscape?

Male
41-50
FireFox
Every 3-6 or 6-12 months, really when teh occasion strikes
I don't buy things online very often because I don't participate in consumer culture, and generally buy the things I need. When a need arises, more often than not it's immediate and I go to a store to satisfy it instead of waiting several days or more, and having to decide to send it to my house and take a day off, or send it to the office and possibly stay late.
Generally if I need something like a new laptop every few years I'll turn to internet stores because the price is lower.
Good price.
About $50 if paying my cell phone online this month counts?
Credit card, onilne, over https.
No. The credit card has protection apart from the web site, so if anything happens online or off, I'm taken care of. This is why I dno't use internet only payment schemes.
Of course!
It depends what I'm diong. Paying for a service, I'm satisfied and the company that hosts the collect my money seems to be satisfied too. Getting a laptop, the last time it happened it took about 2 weeks to get, so I don't like that part.
Anything I need immediately. Which is a lot. No food, like Adam said.
For some things it's a very good idea. I like being able to pya the phone bill from work without having to sit on hold on teh hpone.
Snail Mail.
Yes. I wno't buy anything at all from Joe's Web Sight. There are about half a billion of them in California alone, and if it's not backed at every step by an enterpirse I'm already aware of and generally trust, I won't have any involvement.

there are a lot of choices and products online, but its still best if you can see and test the product before purchasing
In a few years, e-commerce will grow
